Mountain Lions end season with win

Two days after suffering their most disappointing loss of the season, the Mountain Lions rebounded to gain their most satisfying victory.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs concluded its season Sunday with a 2-1 victory over the playoff-bound Colorado School of Mines Orediggers at Brooks Field in Golden, Colo.

Matt Lay and Matt Atkins became the 13th and 14th Mountain Lions to score goals this season. Lay scored his goal in the 34th minute to give CU-Colorado Springs the lead. The goal was assisted by senior Jason Brunner, who played his final collegiate match.

Ten minutes later, Atkins scored an unassisted goal to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.

Just 19 seconds later, Mines halved the score when Justin Buck redirected an Omar Maldonado pass past CU-Colorado Springs goalkeeper Chris Hovasse.

Mines stepped up the pressure in the second half, launching 11 of its 19 shots and limiting CU-Colorado Springs to a single shot. Hovasse and the Mountain Lions' defense were up to the challenge, though, preserving the win.

Mines, which will play in next weekend's RMAC Tournament in Durango, Colo., fell to 10-4-4 overall and 7-3-2 in the conference, while the Mountain Lions finished their season at 4-13 (2-10 RMAC).
