The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs put an end to one unfortunate trend Sunday but was unable to end its losing streak, which reached seven matches with a 2-1 neutral-site loss to St. Mary's at Wichita Falls, Texas.
After St. Mary's took the lead on a James Cooper goal in the 23rd minute, the Mountain Lions answered exactly three minutes later when sophomore
James McMonigle scored on a
Juan Nolasco through pass. It was only the second time, and the first in the past seven matches, the CU-Colorado Springs had scored when trailing by fewer than two goals.
It was McMonigle's first career goal. CU-Colorado Springs (1-8) has scored seven goals this season, each by a different player.
St. Mary's (5-5) scored the game winner in the 43rd minute on a Tony Presenza header.
CU-Colorado Springs managed only five shots in the second half against a packed-in Rattler defense, none of which was on goal. In fact, McMonigle's goal was the only Mountain Lions shot on goal, as St. Mary's goalkeeper Steven Michael did not record a save.
CU-Colorado Springs goalkeeper James Bjorklund was kept busy, making nine saves and facing 26 shots overall.
