Lions can't survive Game 5

For the fifth time in their past seven matches, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs volleyball team played well enough to force a deciding fifth game. For the fourth time in those five matches, they couldn't pull out the win.

The Mesa State Mavericks beat the Mountain Lions 3-2 Saturday evening at the Lions' Den. The loss dropped CU-Colorado Springs to 3-12 overall, 1-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mesa State improved to 6-8, 3-3.

Nikki Green had a game-high 21 kills for Mesa State, which leads the all-time series between the teams 15-2. Kate Matthews added 17 kills for the Mavericks, while Lauren Powley added 14 kills and 13 assisted blocks.

Jill Wrenn led CU-Colorado Springs with 19 kills. The freshman has been the leading scorer for the Mountain Lions in three of their past four matches.

Kristen Denman added 17 kills, and setter Lindsey Hillegas had 64 assists, the sixth highest single-match total in team history.
