COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's soccer team survived a flurry for point blank shots in the first eight minutes, and used goals by
John McElmurry and
James Bisgard to capture a 2-1 victory over No. 19-ranked University of Southern Colorado Wednesday at 4-Diamond Complex.
In the season opener for both teams, CU-Colorado Springs goalie
Mike Archuleta made four early saves to keep the Mountain Lions in the game. McElmurry, a freshman, scored his first career goal just minutes after entering the game, heading a corner kick from Bisgard past USC goaltender Brett Neverve in the 16th minute. Bisgard tallied a goal of his own in the 78th minute off a crossing pass from
Manuel Santana to give the Lions a 2-0 cushion, before Ryan Billiet scored for the Thunderwolves with just 1:11 to play. Bisgard's goal was the only shot the Lions took in the entire second half.
Archuleta finished the game with six saves, while Neverve made one save.
The Mountain Lions host No. 2 Fort Lewis College on Sudnay beginning at 1 p.m. at 4-Diamond Complex.
