COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - No. 2-ranked Fort Lewis College used goals from Curt Slaughter and Brent Diaz to defeat the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 2-0 Sunday at 4-Diamond Complex.
Slaughter opened the scoring in the 13th minute, beating CU-Colorado Springs' goalie
Mike Archuleta after receiving a nice pass from Chris Greer. Scott Baca also received an assist on the goal. The game stayed at 1-0 until Diaz fired a rocket from just outside the 18-yard mark past Archuleta. The Skyhawks, last year's Division II runner-up, were a man down since starting goalkeeper Steve Berglund received a red card for violent conduct in the 72nd minute.
Berglund made three saves in the first half, and his replacement, Devin Zimmerman, did not have to make a save in his 18 minutes of play. Archuleta made six saves for the Lions.
Fort Lewis improved to 3-0 this season and 1-0 in the RMAC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-1 overall and in conference play.
