Nathan Gibson

A Colorado Springs native, Nathan (Nate) Gibson enters the 2026–2027 academic year in his 21st year with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) Mountain Lion Athletics program and his 11th year as Executive Director of Athletics. Since joining UCCS in 2006, Gibson has played a central role in shaping the department’s long-term vision and success, serving as Assistant Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director, Senior Associate Athletic Director, and ultimately being named Executive Director of Athletics in 2016.

Under Gibson’s leadership, UCCS has emerged as one of the premier athletic departments in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and NCAA Division II. His leadership philosophy is rooted in the holistic development of student-athletes, emphasizing competitive excellence achieved through championship processes in academics, athletics, community engagement, and personal growth.

Historic and Sustained Competitive Success
Since Gibson assumed the role of Executive Director of Athletics, Mountain Lion Athletics has experienced unprecedented department-wide competitive success. UCCS programs have captured 38 RMAC championships, surpassing the total number of conference titles won in the institution’s entire prior history.

This era includes the first RMAC championships in program history for men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, and women’s lacrosse—reflecting comprehensive success across team sports, individual sports, and both longstanding and emerging programs.

UCCS teams have also reached national and regional prominence at levels never previously achieved, earning record NCAA rankings across multiple sports and producing the highest Learfield Directors’ Cup finishes in school history. Since 2016, the Mountain Lions have generated a historic number of All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, exceeding the total combined output of the institution’s previous history. Collectively, these accomplishments have defined a new era of sustained competitive excellence for UCCS Athletics.

A Culture of Academic Excellence
Academic achievement has been a defining pillar of Gibson’s tenure. Over the past decade, UCCS student-athletes have maintained a department-wide GPA average of 3.25, while consistently ranking among the top programs nationally in NCAA Division II Academic Success Rate (ASR). Graduation and retention rates have remained well above university, conference, and NCAA benchmarks.

Most notably, UCCS student-athletes have posted a department GPA of 3.0 or higher for 44 consecutive semesters, marking a remarkable 22-year streak that underscores the department’s long-standing culture of academic accountability and excellence.

National Leadership in Community Engagement and Student Well-Being
Mountain Lion Athletics continues to set national standards in community engagement and student development. The department earned national recognition from the NCAA during the 2019–20, 2020–21, 2022–23, and 2023–24 academic years after completing thousands of community service hours, consistently ranking among the Top 10 nationally in NCAA Division II. UCCS has also been recognized by the RMAC as a leader in service, including winning the RMAC SAAC Community Service Cup in 2018 and earning Co-Champion honors in 2023.

In 2022, UCCS Athletics was awarded the prestigious NCAA Innovations in Research Grant for the nationally recognized Mountain Lion Strong program, a comprehensive initiative designed to enhance the mental and physical health resources available to student-athletes.

Strategic Growth and Transformational Facilities
During Gibson’s tenure, UCCS Athletics has undergone strategic and intentional growth, nearly doubling its student-athlete population. This includes the addition of baseball and women’s lacrosse, along with the expansion of track & field to include all event categories, positioning the department for long-term competitive sustainability.

To support this growth, Gibson has led transformative facility initiatives, helping secure $15 million for a new on-campus baseball stadium and indoor track & field facility. He also played a key role in securing more than $1.5 million in upgrades to Mountain Lion Field and Mountain Lion Stadium, including new playing surfaces, scoreboards, benches, and press box enhancements. Most recently, Gibson helped raise more than $500,000 to renovate the basketball and volleyball locker rooms at the Events Center.

National Leadership and Service
Gibson is an active member of the Division II Athletics Directors Association (D2ADA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and has served on numerous RMAC and NCAA conference, regional, and national committees. In 2020, he was selected to the NCAA Division II Championships Committee, serving as Chair from 2023–24. He has also contributed to multiple NCAA Division II Region Advisory Committees, including women’s soccer, women’s basketball, and women’s softball.

Playing Career and Education
A former NCAA Division II student-athlete, Gibson was an RMAC championship quarterback at Chadron State College before transferring to Azusa Pacific University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science. He later completed a master’s degree in sport and exercise science at the University of Northern Colorado.

A graduate of Rampart High School in Colorado Springs, Gibson was a two-time All-Colorado quarterback, leading his teams to a state championship and four Colorado Springs Metro League titles.

Gibson and his wife, Rachel, are the proud parents of two daughters.
