Brandon Masters is in his second season as the Co-Head Men's and Women's Track & Field Coach at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He previously spent three seasons coaching at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
The 2017-18 season stood out as one of the most successful seasons in program history. Masters and Co-Head coach Ross Fellows coached a women's team who accomplished feats that had not yet been done. The Mountain Lions captured their first conference title in program history at the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, and later finished 13th at nationals. UCCS then finished second in the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, but would move on to nationals where Skylyn Webb became the first women's outdoor track and field student-athlete at UCCS to win a national championship. As national champion, Webb set a new meet and championship record in the 800m with a time of 2:02.47 while also qualifying for the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Championships.
Masters' and Fellows' success would continue in the 2017-18 season on the men's side with two second place finishes at the RMAC Championships. UCCS would finish 38th at the NCAA Indoor Championships and tally six total qualifiers for indoor and outdoor nationals. As a result, the Mountain Lions recorded five All-Americans between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The recognition of Masters' and Fellows' 2017-18 season was shown by winning the RMAC Coach of the Year award for women's indoor track & field. Webb would be awarded RMAC Athlete of the Year for both women's indoor and outdoor track & field. While Kaija Crowe was awarded RMAC Freshman of the Year for women's indoor track & field. For both the men's and women's teams combined, Masters' helped coach a total of seven national qualifiers for indoor and a program record eleven national qualifiers for the outdoor season, resulting in a total of fourteen All-Americans.
In his first year with UCCS, Masters helped guide the men’s team to a fourth place finish at the RMAC Indoor Championships, followed by a fifth place finish at the RMAC Outdoor Championships. He helped the women’s team earn sixth place at both conference meets a year ago.
In 2016-17 Masters coached two All-Americans, who earned the status two times each with a total of four national qualifiers over the indoor and outdoor seasons.
A successful student-athlete and coach at Missouri University of Science and Technology will lead an expanded track and field program at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Athletic Director Steve Kirkham announced the hiring of Brandon Masters, who spent three seasons at Missouri S&T and was a part of back-to-back Great Lakes Valley Conference team championships, as the Head Track and Field Coach for the Mountain Lions.
Masters spent three seasons with the Miners where he coached the GLVC men’s indoor and outdoor pole vault champion this spring. The vaulter went on to a No. 12 finish at the national outdoor championships. He coached 10 student-athletes at the national championships in pole vault at Missouri S&T. Masters was also a part of back-to-back men’s outdoor team championships the last two seasons.
Masters was an assistant coach at UCCS for four seasons before his position at Missouri S&T. He coached the Mountain Lion jumpers to four All-America performances, 106 All-RMAC performances, 10 conference champions, 14 All-USTFCCCA region selections and two USATF Junior National Qualifiers.
Masters was a three-time All-American in the pole vault and a national qualifier in the decathlon at Emporia State. He earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the Hornets all four seasons. Masters was a graduate assistant at Emporia State in 1999 and was a member of the coaching staff that won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association men’s and women’s outdoor team championships. The Hornets went on to finish fourth at the women’s outdoor national championships.Â
