    Strength and Conditioning Coach
Mel Herl enters her fourth year with the UCCS Track & Field staff as the strength and conditioning coach for both the men’s and women’s teams in 2022-23.

Herl currently works at the National Strength and Conditioning Association where she is a strength coach in the performance center. She works to develop individual athletes, coaches, and teams, including working with the AAA Tigers hockey team.

Previously, Herl coached collegiately at the Division I and Division II levels for three years. From 2015-17, she coached at her alma mater Chadron State College as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. She then went on to spend a year at Fresno State from 2017-18 as the Assistant Track and Field Throws/Weight Room Coach.

Before getting into coaching, Herl was a two-time National Champion (Hammer, Indoor Shot Put) and seven-time All-American (Discus, Indoor/Outdoor Shot Put, Weight Throw, Hammer) at Chadron State College. Her high level of talent as a throws athlete also led her to become a three-time USATF Championship participant.

Herl received her education from Chadron State where she earned her Bachelor’s in Exercise science with a Minor in Nutrition and Wellness, as well as her Master’s of Organizational Management with an emphasis in Sport Management.
