Nic Cantrell became the Mountain Lions assistant women's basketball coach in May 2024.
The 2024-25 season will mark the sixth season Cantrell will be an assistant coach for Wilson. Cantrell spent the past four seasons as the assistant women's basketball coach with Wilson at Tarleton State University. In four years at TSU, Cantrell oversaw the offensive gameplan and in-game play calling, directed on-court coaching with the guards, and he served as the lead recruiter and team travel director.
Prior to serving as the assistant coach for the TSU women's basketball program, Cantrell held the role of assistant coach for the Tarleton State men's basketball team in 2017-18 and 2018-19 for the second time in his career. Among his responsibilities with the Texans, Cantrell served as the academic liaison and study hall coordinator, director of the TSU summer camps, and led the fundraising efforts while also serving as the lead recruiter, team travel coordinator and guard development.
Cantrell, who played for the TSU men's basketball team from 2005-08, acted as the Texans head student assistant coach for the 2009-10 season, before serving as the TSU graduate assistant coach for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. After completing his graduate assistantship for the Texans, Cantrell was elevated to assistant men's basketball coach for the following two seasons. Entering his seventh season with the TSU men's basketball program, Cantrell assisted in developing practice plans, directed film breakdown, ran the scout teams as well as performing the role as a Kinesiology Professor.
As a student-athlete, Cantrell played for the Texans from 2005-08, helping TSU post a 70-24 record in his three seasons that featured three South Central Regional tournament appearances and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2005-06. He earned both his bachelor's degree in May 2010 and his master's degree in Kinesiology in May 2012 from Tarleton State.
