Josh Thies is entering his ninth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, where he works alongside head coach Jeff Culver in all aspects of the program. During his time with the Mountain Lions, Thies has helped guide the team to four RMAC Tournament appearances, mentoring and recruiting multiple All-Conference honorees, including two Defensive Players of the Year.
Prior to joining UCCS, Thies spent five seasons as the top assistant coach at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. There, he played a pivotal role in one of the most successful stretches in program history, highlighted by a conference championship and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. His work with the Fighting Scots produced numerous All-Conference selections, three Defensive Players of the Year, and 2020 Division III All-American Eric Demers, who led the nation in scoring at 32.4 points per game.
Thies began his coaching career at California Lutheran University, serving as a graduate assistant, JV head coach, and student assistant over six seasons. His tenure helped the Kingsmen capture a conference championship while he gained valuable experience in recruiting, scouting, and player development. He has also been deeply involved in player instruction at numerous elite basketball camps nationwide and is the founder and director of the UCCS Basketball Camp.
A native of California, Thies graduated cum laude from California Lutheran with a B.S. in Exercise Science before earning his M.A. in Education and a California State Teaching Credential. In addition to his coaching career, he is a licensed Colorado real estate agent and certified substitute teacher, bringing a unique blend of leadership and mentoring both on and off the court.
