Mountain Lions Lose to CSU Pueblo in Five Set Battle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team lost 3-2 against Colorado State Pueblo inside the Gallogly Events Center on Saturday afternoon, despite collecting three season high records.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountain Lions started off strong with a kill by Payton Tompkins, but CSUP responded with an impressive kill from Lilly Zwart to tie the score 1-1. The next few minutes resulted in back-and-forth action, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until a 3-0 scoring run forced the ThunderWolves to trail 8-4. However, CSUP answered with a 3-0 scoring run of their own to close the gap in points. After stunning kills by Karlee Pinell and Tompkins, the Mountain Lions were put on their heels as CSUP went on a 6-0 scoring run and took their first lead of the match. Down 16-12, UCCS gained a stint of momentum and responded with a 5-0 scoring run. After the ThunderWolves collected kills by Emma Luce and Andi Nothdurft, the Mountain Lions stretched the deficit with another 3-0 scoring run, forcing CSUP to trail by 21-19. The final two kills of the match were logged by Pinell and Tompkins, successfully earning UCCS a 25-22 victory in the first set.
A slew of substitutions checked into the match for both teams to start the second set. This time, it was CSUP who collected the first point with a kill by Finja Schul. Tompkins quickly recorded a kill of her own, closely followed by kills from Pinell, Sydni Lafasciano, Nicole Himebuach, and Sydnee Walker to earn the Mountain Lions a 7-4 lead. However, the ThunderWolves answered with a 5-0 scoring run just before logging a 3-0 run moments later. CSUP forced the Mountain Lions to trail by at least five points for the remainder of the second set, and ultimately earned a 25-18 victory to tie the match 1-1.
The ThunderWolves were the first to get on the scoreboard with a block by Schul, but UCCS immediately responded with a 4-0 scoring run. After an unfortunate attacking error, a kill by Walker kickstarted a 3-0 run and earned the Mountain Lions an 8-4 lead. The next few minutes resulted in back-and-forth action until a 5-0 scoring run by UCCS forced CSUP to trail 20-12. Ensuing kills by Lafasciano and Walker stretched the gap in points, but a 4-0 scoring run by the ThunderWolves brought the score to 22-17. A final kill by Tompkins sealed a 25-21 third set victory for the Mountain Lions.
The fourth set started similarly to the first set, with neither team collecting more than two consecutive points until UCCS managed to go on a 4-0 scoring run. Two ensuing kills by Walker allowed the Mountain Lions to keep a 10-7 lead over CSUP. Action went up and down the court again, neither side gaining more than a two-point lead for the majority of the set. The ThunderWolves were finally able to go on a 3-0 scoring run and earn a 22-17 lead. Kills by Sydney Hyde and Tompkins could not overcome the deficit in points, and the ThunderWolves claimed victory in the fourth set, 25-20.
Two quick points to start off the fifth set put UCCS in an immediate deficit, but kills by Hyde and Tompkins closed the gap in points. Impressive plays by CSUP forced the Mountain Lions to trail 6-3. Two kills from Himebauch brought some energy to UCCS' side, but they continued to trail by five points after two ThunderWolf service aces. Kills by Walker, Hyde, and Tompkins combined with two service aces by Alysse Marcoso brought the score to 12-11, with CSUP still in the lead. After a close battle, the Mountain Lions took a tough 15-13 loss in the fifth set and dropped the match 3-2 to the ThunderWolves.

MATCH STATISTICS

The Thunderwolves led UCCS in points (108-101), hitting percentage (.179-.176), block solos (3-0), and block assists (24-12). However, the Mountain Lions led in kills (70-54), total attacks (205-179), assists (67-46), and digs (90-86).
Payton Tompkins led the Mountain Lions in kills, logging a total of 20 in this afternoon's match. Sydnee Walker and Sydni Lafasciano chipped in 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Addison Humphrey logged 23 assists while Charlette Albers and Aubrey Miller recorded 19 and 17 assists, respectively.
Alysse Marcoso and Payton Tompkins collected two service aces against the Thunderwolves.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

This afternoon's match marked a season-high for the Mountain Lions, logging a total of 70 kills against the ThunderWolves.
Similarly, UCCS recorded 67 assists against CSUP, beating their previous season high of 56 assists when competing against Rockhurst.
The Mountain Lions collected a third season-high as they logged a total of 90 digs, defeating their previous mark of 79 digs against Michigan Tech.
