HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Mexico Highlands started off scoring as Aspen Salazar put two points on the scoreboard moments after tip-off. As the Cowgirls gained momentum, they went on a 5-0 scoring run to earn an early lead. Brynae Stewart was the first Mountain Lion to secure a bucket, while Jayla Jackson-Allen converted a single free throw a minute later. Aniya Johnson scored her seventh point for NMHU with six minutes remaining in the first quarter, earning the Cowgirls a 9-3 lead. Gia Bradley checked into the game and had an instant impact, securing a stunning three-point basket before assisting Ayianna Johnson's layup. After three minutes of back-and-forth action on both ends, UCCS took their first lead as Johnson went coast-to-coast before scoring off a hook shot. However, seconds before the break, Brynn Hargrove collected an impressive three-point basket from way downtown, forcing the Mountain Lions to trail 17-19 heading into the second quarter.
  • Amyah Moore Allen put an early two points on the scoreboard for UCCS, tying up the game, but the Mountain Lions were quickly put back on defense as Melika Samia converted a three-point shot for the Cowgirls. As each team put up charity stripe points across the following four minutes, NMHU widened their lead to six points as Kamalani Anitielu secured a three-point bucket. Johnson re-entered the game, immediately having a positive impact by scoring five consecutive buckets, adding ten points to UCCS' total. As Rylie Ottmann converted two free throws and a three-point buzzer beater with 0.5 seconds on the clock, the Mountain Lions found themselves on top, leading by four points heading into halftime.
  • Wilson slipped a pass to Johnson for her 18th point of the night, but NMHU responded immediately with a three-point shot from Melika Samia, closing the gap to a single point. Finding the energy they needed to push the Cowgirls back on defense, the Mountain Lions went on a 10-0 scoring run, cut short only by Kamalani Anitielu's impressive three-point shot. With 1:50 left on the clock in the third quarter, Ottmann drove down the right side of the court and secured a layup, pushing NMHU behind 56-48 moments before she collected her fourth rebound of the game. Essynce Contreaz logged one free throw seconds before the break in an attempt to shorten the Mountain Lions' comfortable lead.
  • Jessie Ford was the first Cowgirl to log a point in the final quarter after connecting with Aspen Salazar. After a two-minute scoring drought, Moore Allen found the basket for her 16th point of the afternoon. After subbing in some fresh legs, NMHU brought the score to 66-60 as Essynce Contreaz logged a three-point shot. Each team collected points from the free throw line over the next two minutes, and the Mountain Lions found themselves with a four-point advantage over the Cowgirls with a minute left in regulation. After 59 seconds of fast-paced play, Brynn Hargrove scored a once-in-a-lifetime three-point shot from behind the half line. However, it was not enough to overcome the deficit, and UCCS earned their fifth straight win as the final whistle blew.
