HOW IT HAPPENED
- A layup from UCCS forward Brynae Stewart and a three-point shot by Jayla Jackson-Allen kicked off a high-scoring first half on action on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Lions would build their lead to as high as nine points in the first quarter, but CCU would soon go on a 9-2 run to head into the second, as UCCS held a 20-18 lead.
- Senior Breelyn Robinson would open up the second quarter with a three-point shot in the first eight seconds of action, but the Mountain Lions would soon relinquish their lead as the Cougars went on a seven-point run to take a 25-23 lead. With less than five minutes left in the first half, a skirmish on the court led to a flagrant one foul on CCU's Jordan Heckert, and UCCS' leading scorer of the half, Amyah Moore Allen. The Mountain Lions' junior forward Ayianna Johnson was also involved, and the team would have to resume without her as she was assessed a flagrant two and was removed from competition. After the scuffle on the court, UCCS would go on an 11-9 run to close out the half with a 40-38 lead.
- The Mountain Lions quickly gave up the lead early in the third quarter but would gain it back on layups from Stewart and Rylie Ottmann. Falling down by one again with just over five minutes left in the third, Ottmann made another layup and sank a three-point shot to go up by four. UCCS would end the quarter on an 11-4 run and head into the final 10 minutes with a 63-52 lead.
