Mountain Lions’ Excellent Shooting Propels them to 88-74 Win over Cougars

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team shot 59.1 percent from behind the arc to claim an 88-74 victory over Colorado Christian University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions opened with three-point shots from Brody Hull and Xavier Martinez to take an early 6-2 lead. Four quick points from Marzouq Abdur-Razaaq and a three by Jezza McKenzie would soon extend the lead to 13-4. The Cougars began climbing back and eventually took a 20-17 lead on a three-point shot by Pierce Bazil with just under 12 minutes to play.
  • UCCS would go on to retake the lead thanks to two free throws from Hull and another three from Martinez as the team went up 31-26. CCU would soon move to be within one point, but the Mountain Lions were able to hold on to the lead, going on a 17-8 run in the final five minutes as they went into halftime up 48-38.
  • The Mountain Lions held onto the lead they built for the second half but were threatened when the Cougars went on an 18-6 run for about six minutes to move the score to 70-66 in favor of UCCS. The Mountain Lions would then go on an 11-point run of their own as Hull hit two more three-point shots in the process. From there, UCCS would cruise to an 88-74 victory.
GAME STATISTICS
  • Abdur-Razzaq, Hull, Martinez, McKenzie, and Tre Lucia were the five Mountain Lions to finish in double figures on Saturday as Hull led the team with 23 points.
  • The Mountain Lions finished with 26 rebounds to the Cougars' 33 with McKenzie leading the team with six.
  • The Mountain Lions shot 55.4 percent from the field (31-of-56), 59.1 percent from the three-point line (13-of-22) and 92.9 percent from the free throw line (13-of-14).
  • UCCS had 23 points off turnovers, 34 in the paint, 12 from second chances, 10 off fast breaks, and 21 from the bench.
           
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions' 13 made three-point shots were the second most this season, falling just one short of their best which happened twice this season.
  • Hull's four steals matched the most he has had in a game this season, occurring twice before.
  • Hull's five made three-point shots tied for the most he has had this season, also happening against Westminster University on December 6th.
