Goal by Wearner Earns Mountain Lions 1-0 Victory Over Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The No. 16 University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team defeated Colorado Christian University 1-0 on the road. The Mountain Lions outshot the Cougars 26-3, ten of which landed on frame.

INSIDE THE MATCH-UP

  • Records: #16 UCCS (9-1-5, 4-1-2 RMAC), CCU (3-7-4, 2-4-0 RMAC)
  • Facility: Trailblazer Stadium | Lakewood, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to an all-time record of 50-6-6 after today's victory, extending their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games when competing against the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs pressed the Cougars back into their defensive area immediately, and drew a free kick just outside the box six minutes after the starting whistle blew. Olly Reynolds lined up for the kick, but his shot floated over the defensive wall of Colorado Christian University players and was caught by Cougar goalkeeper Campbell Wolfgram.
  • Six minutes later, Yohann Fila rocketed a shot from outside the box after defeating a defender one-on-one to his right side. The ball landed inches outside the goalpost, forcing the match to continue on as a 0-0 draw.
  • The Mountain Lions found success 17 minutes after kickoff as Maddox Brown lobbed a pass towards the left side of the field, connecting with Fila who went on to send an impressive cross into the box. After a CCU defender whiffed his clearance, Cole Wearner quickly one-touched a shot into the lower left corner of the goal, earning UCCS a 1-0 lead.
  • Moments later, Dalton Uehling blasted a shot from way downtown after Eduardo Macias' shot was deflected seconds before, but the ball ricochetted off the crossbar and out of bounds.
  • The Cougars finally managed to collect an attacking play of their own when Dallas Roberts slipped a cross in from the left side of the field, connecting with a header towards goal from Bodie Curtis. Hugo Sjoberg skillfully saved the shot and denied CCU their scoring opportunity.
  • The Mountain Lions logged 12 shots in the first half while keeping the Cougars to two. Coming out from halftime, four UCCS players recorded at least one shot in the first ten minutes of the second half: Cole Wearner (2), Diego Macias (2), Jack Cook (2), and Olly Reynolds (1).
  • 12 minutes later, Ty Zimmerman earned CCU another attacking chance with a powerful shot towards goal, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar and the Cougars continued to trail 1-0.
  • After two yellow cards forced CCU to play with ten men during the last 17 minutes of regulation, they were unable to find scoring success and UCCS capitalized off their early lead. As the final whistle blew, Hugo Sjoberg logged another clean sheet and the Mountain Lions collected their ninth victory of the season.
