HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs started off strong with a 3-0 scoring run, but was cut short by a kill from Gibson Beckler. Payton Tompkins answered with her third kill of the match, extending the gap in points even further. Chadron State College found the energy to go on a 3-0 scoring run of their own, forcing the Mountain Lions to give up their lead. Action went back and forth over the next few minutes, until kills from Sydney Hyde and Nicole Himebauch combined with a service ace by Tori Greeney earned UCCS a 15-11 lead over the Eagles. Ensuing kills from Sydnee Walker, Sydni Lafasciano, and Hyde allowed the Mountain Lions to secure a 25-18 victory in the first set.
  • Five players subbed into the game for CSC in an attempt to gain some much-needed momentum, but their efforts were throttled as UCCS earned the first two points of the second set. Beckler and Kally Kirkwood were the first two Eagles to score for the visiting team, but multiple kills by Tompkins and Lafasciano kept CSC trailing 9-6. Moments later, the Mountain Lions went on a 4-0 scoring run, earning a 16-9 lead. However, the Eagles responded with a 4-0 scoring run of their own, closing the gap in points. A kill from Walker jump-started a 6-0 scoring run for UCCS, forcing CSC into a 22-13 deficit. Two attacking errors helped the Eagles put two more points on the scoreboard, but a final kill from Hyde earned the Mountain Lions a 25-16 second set victory.
  • CSC started similarly to the last set, putting in an entirely new lineup of players but were still unable to secure the first point of the third set. A service ace by Lafasciano gave UCCS a quick lead, but the Eagles responded with a 3-0 scoring run. The Mountain Lions answered with a 5-0 scoring run of their own to gain a 7-4 advantage over CSC. Kills from Hyde, Tompkins, Lafasciano, and Himebauch combined with service aces by Greeney and Aubrey Miller allowed UCCS to stay on top throughout the remainder of the third set. A final kill from Tompkins forced the Eagles to lose the final set 25-22.
