HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mountain Lions struck early and often in the exposition of the game. The visitors opened the first ten minutes on a 22-16 run, leading by as much as ten (14-4 at 16:33) over the Mountaineers. Marzouq Abdur-Razaaq led the charge with eight points during the stretch as UCCS opened shooting over 50% as a team.
  • The Mountaineers tightened up in the final minutes of the first half, but UCCS still held the narrow advantage for the final ten, outscoring the Mountaineers 23-22 over the last 10:01 of the first half. Guard play was strong for UCCS as Xavier Martinez, and Gavin Carter added seven points and six points, respectively, as UCCS headed for the locker room at halftime with a seven-point lead 45-38.
  • Out of the break it was all UCCS, as the Mountain Lions nearly doubled up the Mountaineers as they constructed a 31-18 run over the first 9:52 of the second half. UCCS shot 67% during that time, as Brody Hull entered the fray, scoring nine of his ten points in the game during the run.
  • With a 20-point lead midway through the final half of action, UCCS put their offense on cruise control as the Mountaineer fans headed for the exits. The Mountain Lions scored just 17 points over the final nine minutes, but it was plenty as they captured the eleven point victory, leading from start to finish.
