Women’s Basketball Earns 79-60 Victory Over Regis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team came back from behind to dominate Regis University, 79-60, Thursday night. Amyah Moore Allen led the team with 17 points, followed closely by Jayla Jackson-Allen who collected 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaylin Venick began putting points on the scoreboard for Regis securing a layup just 30 seconds after tip off, putting the Mountain Lions behind by two. In response, Gia Bradley converted a three-point shot, jump-starting a 6-0 scoring run for UCCS. Both teams traded buckets, finding themselves tied 8-8 with six minutes left in the first quarter. Venick buried her first three-point shot of the game to give Regis the lead, putting the Mountain Lions behind for the remainder of the quarter. UCCS trailed by three points at the break. 
  • Ayianna Johnson converted two free throws just 20 seconds into the second quarter, closing the gap to one point. Regis bounced back with a 6-0 scoring run, earning them a stretch of momentum. Gia Bradley scored a three-point bucket a minute later. That, combined with Mya Wilson's four consecutive points, brought the score to 27-32. After continuing to trade buckets for the remainder of the second quarter, UCCS could not gain the upper hand, and went into halftime trailing 34-37. 
  • Moore Allen entered the game and had an immediate impact, sinking an early layup and igniting energy into the Mountain Lion offense. Breelyn Robinson went on to bury a three-point shot, earning UCCS their first lead of the second half. Jessica Bollwahn converted a layup for the Rangers, tying up the game 39-39. However, their scoring stint was cut short by the Mountain Lions' 12-0 scoring run. Both teams battled up and down the court over the next five minutes. UCCS was able to come out on top at the break, leading comfortably at 60-45. 
  • In an attempt to close the gap, Kate Gallery came out strong with a three-point bucket for Regis, but Jayla Jackson-Allen's layup put the Rangers behind by 12 points once again. Johnson re-entered the game with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and instantly converted a layup for her twelfth point of the night. UCCS ended the game by going on a 14-0 scoring run, effectively putting Regis behind by 19 points and logging another victory. 

GAME STATISTICS
  • Amyah Moore Allen led all scorers with 17 points after sinking 6-of-11 field goals and 5-of-8 free throws. She added four steals and pulled in four rebounds.
  • Jayla Jackson-Allen added 16 points on 7-of-13 field goals and also reigned in four caroms.
  • Ayianna Johnson had a solid performance on both ends of the court with 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
  • Mya Wilson came off the bench to net 14 points, and she dished out six assists.
  • Gia Bradley hit three of the Mountain Lions' eight three-pointers as part of her 10 points tonight.
  • UCCS edged the Rangers on second-chance points, 17-16, and dominated the play in the paint, outscoring the Rangers 38-26, along with a staggering 18-5 advantage on fast-break points.
  • UCCS finished the night shooting 48.3 percent from the floor (29-of-60), 38.1 percent from downtown (8-of-21), and 65 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-20).
  • The Rangers were led by Mary Crossland's 15 points.
  • Regis, which was forced to commit 20 turnovers, shot 38.2 percent on the night, making 21-of-55 field goals. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions snapped a seven game home losing streak to the Rangers with their win tonight. The last time UCCS defeated Regis in Gallogly Events Center was Dec. 9, 2017.
  • Tonight's game marked the first time this season that five Mountain Lions have scored in double figures.
  • Wilson notched career highs in points (14), assists (six) and made field goals (five).
  • The 26-points scored in the third quarter are the third most scored in a quarter by UCCS this season.
