COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday evening against St. Mary's University on their home turf inside Mountain Lion Stadium.

Final: UCCS 0, StMU 1

Records: UCCS (1-1-0, 0-0-0 RMAC), StMU (1-0-1, 0-0-0 LSC)

All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to an all-time record of 3-4-3 against St. Mary's after this evening's match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With the Mountain Lions kicking off first, the Rattlers were put on the defense for the first three minutes of the match. However, the tables turned when St. Mary's midfielder Ricky Alvarez took a free kick in Mountain Lion defensive territory, which allowed AJ Valdivia to record the Rattler's first shot of the match.

  • Six minutes later, UCCS drew a corner kick which gave Drew Sanchez the opportunity to rip a shot towards the top right corner of the net. StMU goalkeeper Johnny Thurbin made a diving save and kept a clean sheet for the Rattlers.

  • Despite UCCS's four-man wall, St. Mary's forward Gael Gallegos put the Rattlers ahead after taking advantage of a free kick and burying the ball in the back of the net. The Mountain Lions trailed by one for the remainder of the first half.

  • UCCS gained their first goal-scoring opportunity of the second half off a corner kick to the backpost, but the header by Maddox Brown was saved and the Rattlers transitioned up the field.

  • The Mountain Lions attempted to even the score after drawing a free kick just outside the box. Eduardo Macias was able to curve the ball around St. Mary's defenders, but the match remained 1-0 after the ball sailed over the crossbar. The Rattlers were able to fend off the Mountain Lions for the remainder of the match, and will travel back home with a win.

STATS FROM THE GAME

  • In a relatively even matchup, the Rattlers outshot the Mountain Lions 12-to-11. Five StMU shots were on frame, as opposed to UCCS's three.

  • The Rattlers recorded seven corners while the Mountain Lions logged five.

  • Miles Seminario recorded three shots for UCCS while Nick Walker shot twice.

  • Goalkeeper Hugo Sjöberg logged the entire 90 minutes and faced 12 shots, making four saves.

  • This is the first UCCS loss at home during a regular-season match since October 17, 2024.
