HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions and ThuderWolves traded blows to begin the game, as the score stood at 20-19 after ten minutes of play, thanks to a clutch three point jumper from James Ellis for UCCS. After that basket, however, UCCS hit a shooting slump allowing the hosts to head on a 9-1 run over the next 3:22 before it was again Ellis who drew a flagrant foul. Ellis, hit the line and sank both free throws to end the drought for UCCS. The Mountain Lions began to chip away at the CSUP lead, but timely baskets from the Pack kept UCCS at bay inside of three minutes to play in half number one. An Armon Muldrew triple put the exclamation point on the first half of play, as CSU Pueblo hit the locker room with a four-point lead at 39-35.
- Out of the locker room UCCS wasted no time getting back into the game, storming on a 9-2 run over the first 4:11 of the second half. Xavier Martinez worked a steal then dashed down the floor for a layup to force CSUP head coach Matt Hammer to call a timeout, as UCCS took a five point lead at 46-41 with 15:49 to play. Ast the horn sounded for the under twelve timeout, CSU Pueblo had only knocked down two bucks in the second half. UCCS, on the other hand, had dropped 8-12 and grown their lead to ten at 53-43. CSU Pueblo began to get their offense going, though it took the T-Wolves almost ten minutes, but UCCS answered the call. After allowing CSUP to get within five, they responded with a run of their own to push the lead back out to ten. Despite a large discrepancy in whistles, (7 fouls against UCCS, to just 1 against CSUP) the Mountain Lions were not deterred and kept the hosts at bay. Over the last five minutes of play UCCS edged out the ThunderWolves thanks to an Xavier Martinez three to punctuate the performance as UCCS wins in Pueblo 80-69.
