Women’s Basketball Suffers Loss to #19 West Texas A&M, 82-71

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team suffers their second loss of the season against #19 West Texas A&M on their home court inside the Gallogly Events Center.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP
  • Final Score: UCCS 71, #19 WT 82
  • Records: UCCS (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) | WT (4-1, 0-0 LSC)
  • Facility | Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: UCCS is now 3-11 all-time against the Lady Buffs. The last time the Mountain Lions were able to defeat WT was in 2011, earning a 66-62 result at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS gained the first bit of momentum by winning the tip-off. However, it was the Lady Buffs who scored first, with Taylor Haggan putting five points on the board in the first minute of play. Amyah Moore Allen was the first Mountain Lion to score for the home team, breaking WT's 5-0 run. In a relatively even matchup, the Lady Buffs and Mountain Lions traded baskets for the majority of the first quarter. With nearly two minutes to go before the break, Moore Allen scored her first three-pointer of the game, tying up the score 15-15. WT managed to get two points ahead just seconds before the end of the first quarter, but Ellie Reynolds scored a jaw-dropping three-point buzzer beater to take the lead over the Lady Buffs, 22-21.
  • WT guard Randi Harding started the second quarter off strong for the Lady Buffs, scoring a three-point bucket and putting the visiting team back in the lead. WT stayed on the offensive, going on a 7-0 run and running the score up to 28-22. Their scoring streak was broken by Moore Allen, who successfully converted both free throws. After an impressive no-look pass from Mya Wilson, Johnson was able to score a layup and bring the score within two points, 28-30. Ellie Reynolds converted a three-point shot and a layup in the last two minutes of the second quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Lady Buff's lead. When the halftime whistle blew, UCCS trailed 45-37.
  • Johnson had an impressive start to the second half, scoring three layups in a row, followed by two converted free throws. This stint brought UCCS within three points of the Lady Buffs, but a change in momentum allowed WT to go on a 9-0 run. A stunning three-point bucket from Claire Graham put the Lady Buffs at their highest lead to close out the third quarter, 17 points ahead of the Mountain Lions.
  • UCCS was off to a strong start in the fourth quarter, with Brynae Stewart and Moore Allen both scoring three-point shots in the first two minutes. Moments later, Jayla Jackson-Allen was on the receiving end of a long pass from Moore Allen and went on to score a driving layup, closing the gap to 72-66. Despite outscoring WT 22-16 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to overcome the overall deficit and the Mountain Lions suffered their second loss of the season.
