Men’s Soccer Remains Undefeated in RMAC Play with a Gritty 3-2 Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team stays undefeated (2-0-0) in RMAC play and gets back above .500 (4-3-3) overall with a 3-2 victory Sunday morning over the Westminster University Griffins.

All-Time Series: With their win on Sunday UCCS extended their all-time series lead over Westminster to 18-9-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Westminster got the scoring started early in the 7th minute when midfielder Owen Gallo danced past the UCCS defense and snuck a shot past Hugo Sjöberg for his second goal of the year.
  • The Mountain Lions evened the game at 1-1 in the 26th minute when Miles Seminario connected on his third goal of the season off of an assist from Nick Walker.
  • Sjöberg saved the tie in the 30th minute after turning away a wide-open shot by Griffin midfielder Ashton Duran.
  • Westminster threatened again at the end of the first half, but Luke Noameshie neutralized the attack with an incredible tackle to keep the game tied.
  • UCCS started the second half with numerous scoring opportunities from a free kick and three corners in the first eight minutes. However, the Westminster defense, with help from an incredible save by freshman goalkeeper Oliver Olsen, kept the Mountain Lions off the board.
  • Westminster retook the lead in the 62nd minute as midfielder Cameron Neeley netted his second goal of the season.
  • Seminario tied the game in the 78th minute with his second goal of the day on a penalty kick after Jack Cook drew a foul in the 18-yard area.
  • UCCS took their first lead of the game seconds later in the 79th minute as Drew Sanchez scored his first goal of the season with help from a crosser from Cook.
  • Westminster's hopes of winning were exhausted after Westminster Freshman Forward George Acurero picked up a two quick yellow cards in the 85th and 87th minutes respectively as the Mountain Lions secured the 3-2 win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Westminster led the Mountain Lions in shots on target (4-5) despite having fewer total shots (11-8). UCCS also led the Griffins in corners (6-3) and saves (3-1).
  • Hugo Sjoberg converted on three of his five save opportunities as he outperformed his counterpart Olsen who only converted one of his four.
  • Seminario's two goals are a new season best for him and ties his career best, which he's achieved only one other time, last season against CSU Pueblo on Sep. 29, 2024.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS has now won six straight against the Griffins and has not lost since Oct. 1, 2021.
  • The Mountain get back above .500 on the season for the first time since they lost to St. Mary's (TX) on Sep. 6.
  • With Miles Seminario's two goals he tied the team lead in goals with four and took the team lead in points with 10.

  • UCCS travels to Rapid City, S.D. to kick off a three-game road trip against South Dakota School of Mines. The game will take place at SDM Dakota Fields at 5 p.m. (MT).
