HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kinley Gomez started off Thursday's action with an ace, giving UCCS a 1-0 lead as the Mountain Lions never trailed FLC in the set. An immediate 5-0 run by the black and gold pushed their lead to 7-2 after Nicole Martin tallied a kill, assisted on a block, and then posted a solo block. The Skyhawks clawed back with three straight kills to cut their deficit down to two, 8-6. A hitting error that was charged to Sydnee Walker late in the set was overturned on head coach Tara Hittle's challenge, giving UCCS a 17-12 cushion. With the set win in sight, Martin put down a kill and an ace, followed by two kills from the hand of Sydnee Hyde for a 22-14 lead and the eventual 25-17 win.
- Two FLC attacking errors and a kill from Payton Tompkins gave the Mountain Lions a quick 3-0 lead, but the home team was able to knot the set at 5-5 in part due to two attacking errors by UCCS. After a kill from Hyde that put UCCS on top, 9-7, the Skyhawks went on a 6-2 run that saw them block two UCCS attacks and put down two kills as the Mountain Lions trailed for the first time all night, 13-11. Facing a 19-16 deficit, the Mountain Lions rallied for a comeback and went on a 5-2 run that featured kills from Maylen Mitrovich and Martin, and a block from Walker and Martin to tie the set at 21-21, forcing the home team to use a timeout. Sydney Walker stepped to the service line with her team down 24-23 with her serve starting a long rally between the two teams that featured Walker making a pancake save to keep the rally alive and eventually ending in favor of UCCS after an FLC setting error. Gomez and Hyde combined for back-to-back kills to win set two in extras, 26-24, with UCCS scoring the final four points of the set.
- In a tightly contested third set, the Mountain Lions tallied the first point of the set for the third straight time tonight. The final set featured 11 ties and five lead changes in a tightly contested round. Mitrovich set up Martin for a kill to knot the set at 11-11, sparking a 6-1 run by UCCS. Two Skyhawks errors and an ace from Walker gave the Mountain Lions a little support, 16-12. After back-to-back kills from FLC's Ellie Ames and Ryli Kalahiki, UCCS broke open the 16-14 set and outscored the Skyhawks, 9-2, to win the set, 25-16.
