Men's Basketball Drops a Tough 83-78 Battle at Regis University

1/16/2025 9:13:00 PM

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team loses for the first time in 2025 as they drop the first game of the weekend at Regis University 83-78.

INSIDE THE MATCH-UP
Final: UCCS 83, RU 78
Records: UCCS (10-5, 4-3 RMAC), RU (7-8, 5-2 RMAC)
Facility: Regis Fieldhouse | Denver, Colo.
All-Time Series: Regis extends their win streak vs UCCS to the last five meetings, and their all-time series advantage to 43-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mountain Lions started with the upper hand as play got underway, as they battled to a five-point lead at 14-9 advantage after eight minutes of action. The offense then hit a cold stretch, allowing the Rangers to tie it at 14 before Gavin Carter's layup put UCCS back on top by two at the midway point of the first half.
  • Regis took control of the half the rest of the way as they embarked on  a 28-23 run across the final 9:20 of the first half. Though UCCS was put on the back foot, they would not go away quietly as they scored four unanswered points in the final eight seconds of the half to end the half at just a three-point deficit at 42-39.
  • The Rangers continued to keep the Mountain Lions at a distance as they picked up on their first half momentum. Leading by as much as eight points after play resumed from halftime, the Rangers looked to pull away from UCCS. The Mountain Lions had other plans, however, as they went on an 8-3 run over a 4:37 stretch halfway through the period to tie the game at 60 a side.
  • Despite the Mountain Lions best efforts in the last eight minutes of play, they just couldn't get over the hump. With just under two minutes to play, a key stretch that included three straight Regis blocks, followed by a three pointer at the other end of the floor was the nail in UCCS' coffin as their winning streak is halted at five games in the 83-78 loss to Regis.

STATS FROM THE GAME

  • Xavier Martinez continues his hot scoring, as he drops 24 points in Denver. This is his second outing, scoring 20+ points in as many games.
  • William Becker notches his seventh double-double of the year, scoring 15 points while reeling in 12 rebounds.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Willliam Becker tightens his chase on Derrick White's blocked shots record as he picks up two more rejections in Denver, trailing White by just one block.
