Mountain Lions Fall Short in Nail Biter Versus Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team played the Regis University Rangers neck and neck throughout their five-set match on Thursday night but ultimately fell short in the fifth set, 15-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Thursday night's match began with the Mountain Lions up 2-0, but Regis responded with an 8-2 run, taking an 8-4 lead. The Rangers would increase the lead to five (10-5), forcing UCCS to take a timeout. Emily Pruitt responded out of the break with a kill off an assist from Audrey Dowd, but the Rangers would not let momentum be gained by the Mountain Lions, scoring the following four points unanswered (14-6). Regis led as much as 17-9 until UCCS ripped an 11-3 run to even things up at 20. The two teams traded points from there and were knotted up at 24 apiece. At that point, Maylen Mitrovich connected with Payton Tompkins, who sent it down for a kill. UCCS would tackle the next point with a service error from the Rangers to complete the set one comeback, 26-24
  • The excitement carried into set two as both teams played evenly in the beginning. The Mountain Lions pushed the Rangers to take a timeout after scoring three straight points from Regis attack errors, giving UCCS a 10-8 lead. The Mountain Lions maintained momentum, adding three points from two kills by Avery Ahlers and one from Mitrovich, bringing the score to 13-8. However, the Rangers quickly responded, scoring six consecutive points to reclaim the lead 14-13. The teams were neck and neck to close the set. Trailing 22-21, Rylee Pitts evened the score with a kill, followed by another from Michelle Fredrick, putting them just two points away from a winning set two at 23-22. The set remained competitive, as Regis took a brief 24-23 lead, but Tompkins and Pruitt delivered two consecutive kills to regain the edge at 25-24. The Rangers showcased their resilience, scoring the next three points to clinch the second set, 27-25.
  • The third set mirrored the first two, with both teams trading scoring runs, leads, and ties. Trailing 22-21, the Mountain Lions recorded the following two points with a kill from Sydnee Walker and another from Tompkins. Danielle Varela and Tompkins then teamed up for a block to secure the next point for UCCS. Tompkins sealed the set with a kill, ending it at 25-22 and giving the Mountain Lions a 2-1 set advantage. UCCS collected 17 kills in set three for a hitting percentage of .220.
  • Regis took control early in set four and built a 20-13 lead. UCCS mounted a slim attempt at a comeback but ultimately dropped the set, 25-17, evening up the match at 2-2. The Mountain Lions struggled in the fourth set, only collecting 10 kills for a hitting percentage of .083.
  • In the decisive fifth set of the match, UCCS opened to a 5-2 lead, resulting in a timeout from the Rangers. Three of the opening Mountain Lion points came from Tompkins's kills. At the halfway point of the fifth set, UCCS held an 8-6 lead. Regis notched things up quickly and took a 9-8 lead after a Mountain Lion attack error. The Rangers rode this momentum to a 12-10 lead, looking to put the final touches on the match. UCCS pulled the game within a point a handful of times, but ultimately, Regis would finish things off and win the fifth set 15-13.

MATCH STATISTICS

  • UCCS was led by Tompkins, who recorded 24 kills and 26.5 points with a hitting percentage of .276. She also tallied 19 digs, 1.5 total blocks, and one service ace.
  • Pruitt and Walker were in the double-digits in kills with 12 and 11, respectively, while each recorded a service ace.
  • Setting their teammates up for kills all evening was Dowd (31 assists) and Mitrovich (18 assists) who helped UCCS to 57 assists in total.
  • The Mountain Lions finished with 63 kills, hit .165, and dug up 71 attacks.
  • The Rangers put down 69 kills for a hit percentage of .244 while out-blocking the Mountain Lions 14-12.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Payton Tompkins's 26.5 points, 24 kills, and 19 digs mark as the most she has recorded in a five-set match this season.
  • UCCS is 2-1 in five-set matches this year.  
  • With the loss, the Rangers increase their match-winning streak to 14 straight matches over the Mountain Lions. Regis owns a 25-2 record over UCCS on their home court. The last time the Mountain Lions defeated the Rangers was September 17, 2016.
