Barajas’ Brace Leads Men’s Soccer to 3-1 Victory Over DBU

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team stays undefeated with a 3-1 victory Saturday morning over the Dallas Baptist University Patriots.

All-Time Series: Saturday morning's matchup against the Patriots was the first in UCCS program history, UCCS is now 1-0-0 in the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions started off aggressively on the attack in the first half with a missed connection by junior forward Cole Venable off a cross from junior defenseman Soulo Letsoalo. Seconds later, Letsoalo recorded a shot on frame that was saved by DBU goalkeeper Patrick Banich.
  • After their aggressive start, Venable was tripped up in the penalty area in the 24th minute of action leading to a penalty kick goal by Dani Barajas into the middle of the Patriots' net for the first score of the game.
  • Just 10 minutes later in the 33rd minute, Barajas converted his second goal of the game and third of the season off of an assist by Letsoalo. Barajas is now tied for the team lead in goals.
  • The action continued in the second half as the Mountain Lions added seven more shots with three on-goal including a try by junior midfielder Eric Estrada in the 58th minute of the match.
  • A second-half scoring drought lasted until the 70th minute when graduate student defenseman Adin Schwenke scored on a header into the Patriots' goal off of an assist by Estrada marking the first goal of the season for Schwenke.
  • The Mountain Lions maintained their three-goal lead for four minutes until Patriots midfielder Evan Pustejovsky fired a ball past UCCS junior goalkeeper Soren Russell into the bottom left corner for the final goal of the match.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • The Mountain Lions outshot the Patriots 11 to four with seven shots on goal to DBU's one. UCCS also led the game in corner kicks four to three.
  • Barajas led the Mountain Lions in scoring with two goals to give him three on the season.
  • Letsoalo and Estrada both recorded assists on the Mountain Lions' second and third goals of the game, respectively.
  • Schwenke was the lone field player for UCCS that logged the entire 90 minutes of playing time.
  • Goalkeeper Russell also logged the entire 90 minutes and did not convert his only save opportunity in the 75th minute.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS moves to 1-0-0 all-time against DBU after their Saturday victory.
  • The Mountain Lions continue to remain undefeated this season with an overall record of 3-0-1.
  • Barajas scored his third goal in the last two games and has surpassed his goal total from 2023. 
  • In their first four games, the Mountain Lions have already matched their penalty kick total of the 2023 season with four and have shot 100% on those opportunities.
