HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Yellow Jackets jumped out to the early lead in the first half, as they opened the game with a 19-15 run over nine minutes and four seconds after the tip. Though, UCCS kept up their fight as the stretch included three ties along the way. Black Hills displayed a balanced attack with six different scorers, with none scoring more than four points, while UCCS had just three scorers including seven from Hannes Saar and six from Gavin Carter.
- The Mountain Lions had all the momentum down the stretch of the half, with UCCS responding by doubling up the visitors with a 26-13 run over the final ten minutes of the half. Gavin Carter maintained his pace adding seven more points for a 13 point total in the half, only bested by William Becker's eight points on the push, with UCCS heading to the room with a nine point advantage at 41-32.
- Black Hills State made the necessary adjustments at the half, coming back at UCCS with stellar shooting. Going 12-19 from the floor including 5-7 from three point land, the Yellow Jackets roared back on a 30-16 run to take a five-point 62-57 lead.
- The see-saw continued to alternate as the Mountain Lions fought back over the last 9:47 led by eight points from Hannes Saar, including a tip-in bucket at the buzzer to tie the contest at 81 and force overtime in front of the packed crowd at Gallogly.
- The overtime period was an intense one as the teams traded four lead changes, but ultimately it was Black Hills State that pulled away, as UCCS couldn't score in the last 40 seconds. The Yellow Jackets, forcing the Mountain Lions into the foul game, made all their free throws to bag a 95-89 OT road victory.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Cam Lowe led all scorers on the night with 28 for the Yellow Jackets, Hannes Saar led the Mountain Lions with 26.
- William Becker recorded his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
- Gavin Carter knocked down a career-high 17 points on the night, doing so in just 18 minutes on the floor.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- UCCS has now lost six straight games to Black Hills State, with the last UCCS win coming on February 11th, 2022 when they beat BHSU 92-63 in Colorado Springs.
- UCCS' 15 fouls on the night is tied for the most in a single game this season, joining their games vs Midwestern State (11/8), and vs. Pittsburgh State (11/14).
