HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions started quickly in Golden on Tuesday evening, as UCCS secured the opening tip with Xavier Martinez draining the first shot attempt with a corner three. The Mountain Lions then went scoreless for the next five minutes, trailing by eight points when Xavier Martinez hit his second basket of the game to cut the lead to 11-5 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
- As the first half continued so did the Mountain Lions shooting struggles. With 7:46 left in the period, the horn sounded for the half's penultimate media timeout and UCCS sat on a stark 5-24 (20.8%) from the field, trailing 29-16. With Martinez and William Becker accounting for ten of the sixteen UCCS points, the defensive plan for Mines remained simple and expected.
- As the first half came to a close, shooting woes remained the blaring issue for UCCS as they sat at 23.5% (8-34) compared to the Orediggers who went a consistent 50% (13-26) and held the 17-point lead at 43-26.
- Quality shooting from the Orediggers added to their lead as they improved to 58% from the field after the first six minutes of the second half, with UCCS making improvement as well, but not at the same clip. Seven minutes into the final half, UCCS head coach Jeff Culver was forced to call a time out to try and cool the red-hot Mines offense as the lead had grown to 71-37.
- The second half matured with more of the same from both teams, seeing the Mines lead balloon through the thirties and into the low forties. Frustration began to overtake the Mountain Lions in the final minutes with the Orediggers remaining in cruise control. It just wasn't the Mountain Lions night on Tuesday in Golden, as they fell to the Orediggers
