HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS dominated the time of possession to start Sunday afternoon's match as they attempted seven shots compared to the Griffin's zero in the first 20 minutes of play. The Mountain Lions got the scoring started in the 22nd minute as Kolby Raineri made a move toward the net, passing it through a few defenders back to Ben Ashfield who sent it with his right foot just past the Westminster goalkeeper putting them up 1-0.
  • The Mountain Lions finished the rest of the half strong putting more pressure on the Griffins, but the score would remain 1-0 going into half.
  • Out of the break, the Mountain Lions were back to the scoring column after Marvin Putu put some nice moves on the Westminster defense, freeing himself for a pass to Peter Chang who kicked it in stride deflecting off the diving goalkeeper but still rolling in putting UCCS up 2-0.
  • In the 57th minute the Griffin's were just able to slip past the Mountain Lions defense and grab a goal of their own making the score 2-1. UCCS had a swift response for this as they notched another goal in the 62nd minute after Putu forced his way into the box, booting it out to Lars Walczyk who freed up space to kick it with his left foot slipping it past the goalkeeper as it found the back of the lower right of the net.
  • After being down 3-1, Westminster added a late goal after they sent a corner kick in front of the net that bounced off a Mountain Lion defender resulting in an own goal. UCCS held it down to finish the match and would secure the 3-2 victory.
