Men’s Soccer Opens Season With Hard-Fought 0-0 Draw Against Rockhurst

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Rockhurst University men's soccer teams battled hard for 90 minutes on Friday night at Mountain Lion Stadium, but neither team managed to find the net as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to 0-3-1 all-time against the Hawks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:      
  • The Mountain Lions entered the match with an aggressive offensive approach as they peppered Hawks' goalkeeper Andrea Dorella with seven shots, including two on goal, within the opening 15 minutes.
  • UCCS continued to apply pressure to the Rockhurst defense for the remainder of the first half as they finished the opening 45 minutes with 15 shots, five of them being on frame. On the defensive end, the Mountain Lions held RU without a shot attempt until the 36th minute and took a 15-1 shot advantage into the second half.
  • After a chippy start to the second half with a pair of yellow cards being issued to Rockhurst players within in the first eight minutes of play, the Hawks gained some offensive momentum as a blocked shot set them up with a corner kick in the 58th minute. On the set piece into the box, first-year Mountain Lion goalkeeper Declan Domyan was tested for the first time as he made a diving save on a shot by Jake Muckerman to keep the game scoreless.
  • The match continued to intensify as the second half progressed, with the two teams combining for nine more yellow cards before the final buzzer. Despite the hard-fought contention, neither team would find the nylon as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • The Mountain Lion's offensive attack was prevalent throughout the match as they outshot the Hawks 24-7. UCCS also paced RU in corner kicks with a 10-3 advantage in the category.
  • Senior Kolby Raineri led the Mountain Lions with five shots, while junior Alex Andersson recorded four shots and paced the team with two shots on goal. Matteo Moreno Madrid, Lars Walczyk, Kaydon Zamora-Reeves, and Rory Scott each added a pair of shots.
  • In his first career start in frame for the UCCS, Domyan recorded a 90-minute shutout with a two saves.
  • Also contributing to the shutout with 90-minute performances on the defensive end were Scott, Moreno Madrid, and Carlos Vargas.
  • The Mountain Lions and Hawks combined to draw 12 yellow cards, with eight being issued to RU and four to UCCS. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Ten student-athletes made their debuts with the UCCS men's soccer program on Friday night, including Domyan, Moreno Madrid, Walczyk, Vargas, Cole Van Holland, Scott, Marvin Putu, Ben Ashfield, Miles Seminario, and Abe Lopez.
  • The Mountain Lion's last 0-0 draw came last season against Montana State Billings on Sept. 5, 2021.
  • The season-opening draw is the team's first since they opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Hawaii Pacific.
