Lacrosse Falls by Golden Goal to Golden Bears, 14-13

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A golden goal by the Golden Bears of Concordia, St. Paul resulted in a 14-13 setback for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon.  The game was the Mountain Lions first game of the season as they opened 2022 at Mountain Lion Stadium.

  • All-Time Series: Today's match was the second ever match between UCCS and CSP with the Golden Bears winning both contests.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Today's game featured 10 scoring ties and four lead changes as neither team led by more than two goals.
  • Concordia-St. Paul found the back of the net first when Delaney Davidson scored her third goal of the season just 49 seconds from the first draw.
  • Junior transfer Sarah Watts scored her first goal repping a Mountain Lions jersey to even the score at 1-1. Natalie Church gave the Mountain Lions their first goal of the game and the season with a free position goal at 12:33 in the first quarter. One minute later Julia Patrick found Annalise Carr as the Mountain Lions grabbed their largest lead of the game, 3-1.
  • The Golden Bears responded with three straight goals for the second lead change of the afternoon, 4-3.  Audrey Napp evened the game with 91 seconds left in the first quarter on her first free position goal of the season.
  • CSP took advantage of the Mountain Lions having a player in the penalty box to score a player-up goal, 5-4, as the first period came to an end.
  • Watts answered with her second goal of the game and a player-up goal four minutes into the second quarter.
  • Angela Naughton, Church and Hannah Mill each found the back of the net in the second quarter while Molly Moynihan scored the final two goals of the half.  Redshirt-sophomore Mill's goal gave the Mountain Lions an 8-7 lead at the half.
  • The Golden Bears netted the first two goals of the second half before Holly Sodomka netted the eighth game-tying goal of the afternoon, 9-9. 
  • Trailing 12-10 entering the final stanza, Annalise Carr connected with sophomore Julia Patrick to cut into CSP's lead, 12-11.  Minutes later and back to a two-goal deficit, Napp and Hannah Koopal scored on free position shots to even the game at 13-all and sending it into overtime.
  • With both teams scoreless after the first three-minute portion of overtime, it appeared the game was heading to a second overtime but the Golden Bears scored the game-winning goal with eight seconds left.
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Napp and Church led the offense with three points each as both Mountain Lions recorded two goals and an assist. 
  • Watts and Naughton joined Napp and Church with multiple-goals (two each).
  • Naughton tallied a game high seven shots and five shots on goal.
  • Napp picked up a game high four ground balls and a team high six draws.
  • Mill notched a team high five caused turnovers while Naughton added three.
  • CSP's Moynihan led both teams in goals (five) and points (six).
  • UCCS outshot the Golden Bears by 15, 42-27, including a 24-10 shot advantage in the first half.  The Mountain Lions also edged CSP in ground balls, 22-18, and committed five fewer turnovers, 18-23.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Today's overtime game was the second time in program history that UCCS went into extra frames.  The Mountain Lions won their first overtime game on March 2, 2020, earning a 9-8 win over Northern Michigan.
  • Today marked the first game for Melissa Rausch leading the Mountain Lions as UCCS' head coach.  Rausch served as an assistant coach the past two years

  • The Mountain Lions will return to action in 16 days when they play host to Regis University to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.
