PREVIEW | Women’s Basketball Heads North for Final Regular Season Road Trip

THIS WEEK'S GAMES
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will travel North to Denver this weekend for their final road games of the regular season.  The Mountain Lions will play at Colorado Christian University Friday night at 5 p.m., followed by Saturday's matchup at MSU Denver at 4 p.m.
 
GAME COVERAGE  
LAST TIME OUT
  • UCCS played three home games last week beginning with a makeup game against Colorado Mesa University on Wednesday which was originally scheduled for Dec. 31, 2021.  The Mountain Lions stayed home Friday and Saturday to play host to Black Hills State University and Chadron State College.
  • The Mountain Lions fell short of their upset bid against the Mavericks, falling 69-63.  Shelby Megyeri came off the bench to lead three Mountain Lions in double digits with 18 points.  Jasmine Jeffcoat added 15 points and Sophie Abela chipped in 10. UCCS held a 13-rebound advantage over CMU, thanks in large part to Agar Farres' 10 rebounds.
  • UCCS lost a three-point decision on Friday to the Yellow Jackets, 55-52.  Gracie Haneborg and Jeffcoat tied for team high honors with 12 points as the Mountain Lions dominated play in the paint, outscoring BHSU, 32-14.  UCCS notched their second straight double-digit rebounding effort, this time outrebounding the Yellow Jackets by 14, 44-30.
  • The Mountain Lions closed out the weekend with a convincing 78-61 win over Chadron State.  Four Mountain Lions scored at least 13 points as Megyeri led all scorers with 17 points. Jeffcoat was one rebound shy of a double-double behind a 16-point, nine-rebound performance.
 
RMAC RECORD/STANDINGS
  • Colorado School of Mines continues to sit on top of the RMAC standings with a 16-2 record (21-3 overall).
  • MSU Denver is tied with Black Hills State University for fourth place in the RMAC as both teams are 13-4 in the RMAC.
  • The Mountain Lions are tied with Adams State at 8-10 for the eighth spot in the RMAC.
  • Friday's opponent, Colorado Christian, is in 13th place in the league standings with a 4-13 RMAC record (7-16 overall).
 
THE SERIES
  • Vs. CCU: The Mountain Lions are 31-20 all-time against the Cougars, and have won nine of the last 11 games, including their last meeting on Jan. 22, 2022, 68-65.
  • Vs. MSUD: The Roadrunners lead the all-time series against UCCS, 42-11.  The Mountain Lions are looking to snap a five-game losing streak against the Roadrunners and avenge a loss earlier this season, 54-47, on Jan. 21.
 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
  • Colorado Christian enters the weekend playing their final home games of the season.  Four of CCU's six wins this season (6-16) have come on their home court, including their last win on Feb. 4 against Regis (81-79).
  • Jordyn Brown leads CCU's offense with 10 points per game on 35.3 field goal shooting.  Owning the boards for the Cougars is Lourdes Gonzalez.  Gonzalez, who is the only player to have started all 22 games for CCU, is pulling down the second most rebounds in the league (7.7 average) and is second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per game while blocking a team high eight shots.
  • The Cougars are getting outscored an average of 7.6 points per game.  CCU is netting 62.4 points per game while allowing 70 points.
 
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
  • The Roadrunners of MSU Denver are currently on a four-game winning streak and have won 12 of their last 13 games.  MSU Denver is 17-5 entering the final stretch of the regular season and have won eight of their last 10 home games.
  • Allie Navarette is scoring a team high 13.9 points per game, ranking ninth in the RMAC in scoring, fourth in rebounding (7.1 rebounds per game), and fifth in the league in free throw percentage, draining 80.9 percent from the line (106-of-131).  Teammate Jaela Richardson is second on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game, while ranking sixth in the RMAC in rebounds per game (6.8) and fifth in blocks (28, 1.3 per game).
  • As a team, the Roadrunners are one of the top shooting teams in the league, ranking second in field goal percentage (42.9 percent, 536-of-1248) and third in free throw percentage (75.1 percent, 331-of-441).  Their 68.5 points per game is the fourth highest scoring average in the RMAC while holding their opponents to just 61.2 points per game.
 
HOT TAKES
  • UCCS held the Mavericks to a season low 30 rebounds on Wednesday.
  • The Mountain Lions have outrebounded their opponent in 19 games this season and have held a double-digit rebounding advantage eight times.
  • UCCS has shot the ball 40 percent or better from the floor in 16 games, while posting a higher shooting mark than their opponent 17 times.
  • The Mountain Lions' 26 dimes on Saturday against CSC are the most this season and the sixth most in a game in program history.
  • Three Mountain Lions started last week with career highs against the Mavericks.  Megyeri posted career highs in points (18), field goals made (seven) and three-point field goals made (three), while Abela drained a career high five made field goals and Farres dished out a career high six assists.
  • Megyeri matched her made field goals career high on Friday against Black Hills State, sinking another seven buckets from the floor while Haneborg reigned in a career high five rebounds.
  • More career high milestones were reached on Saturday against the Eagles as Megyeri tallied five assists while Alexa Dominguez registered a career high four dimes.  Jeffcoat tallied career highs on made field goals (nine) and attempted (12).
  • UCCS has blocked at least one shot in all but one game this season and have blocked at least two shots in 20 games.
  • The Mountain Lions are one of the top rebounding teams in the conference, ranking first in rebounds (1,009) and rebounds per game (42.0).  UCCS is second in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (14.3) and rebound margin (8.1), and third in defensive rebounds per game (27.7) and free throw attempts (454).
 
AWARD WINNERS
  • The RMAC announced the 2021-22 RMAC All-Academic Teams on Jan. 31.  Five Mountains were named to the Honor Roll:
 
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT
  • Lynn Plett is in his sixth season as head coach of the Mountain Lions in 2021-22, and his 24th season overall.  He owns a career record of 304-351 and a 73-84 record at UCCS.
  • UCCS has been named to the WBCA Top 25 Team Academic Honor Roll for four straight years. Plett guided the Mountain Lions to their first RMAC championship title in program history in his first season in 2016-17, and their third NCAA Tournament appearance. 
  • Plett has coached at St. Joseph's (1994-95 to 2001-02), Lewis (2002-03 to 2006-07), and Missouri Western State (2007-08 to 2011-12) prior to joining the Mountain Lions.
 
UPCOMING GAMES
  • The Mountain Lions will close out the regular season at home against New Mexico Highlands University on Tuesday, Feb. 22, and against South Dakota School of Mines on Thursday.  Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
