THIS WEEK'S GAMES
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will continue their four-game road trip this weekend when they head to the Western Slope to take on Western Colorado University on Feb. 4, and Fort Lewis College on Feb. 5. Friday's action will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by Saturday's game against the Skyhawks at 5 p.m.
GAME COVERAGE
LAST TIME OUT
- UCCS started the week with a road game on Tuesday at New Mexico Highlands University. The Mountain Lions earned their second straight win after defeating the Cowgirls, 66-48. UCCS finished the week with a two-point setback at South Dakota Mines, 73-71.
- Ellie Moore scored a team high 10 points at NMHU after making 3-of-5 from the floor and all four free throw attempts. She added three rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Agar Farres led all players with 10 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive glass. UCCS held a 16-rebound advantage, 39-23, including 10-6 on the offensive end of the court. The Mountain Lions dominated the paint, outscoring the Cowgirls 42-16. UCCS forced NMHU to commit 19 turnovers which led to 16 points.
- Four days later in Rapid City, S.D., the Mountain Lions came close to winning their third straight game, but ultimately fell to the Hardrockers, 73-71. Jessica Nation came off the bench to lead the Mountain Lions in scoring with 15 points.
- Shelby Megyeri also added two treys and chipped in 12 points off the bench, while Sophie Abela led the starters with 10 points and was perfect from the floor, making all four field goal attempts, including one from three-point range. Farres pulled down a game high 10 rebounds and added five points, a steal and an assist. Moore dished out a game high four dimes and was one point shy of double digits.
RMAC RECORD/STANDINGS
- Colorado School of Mines continues to sit on top of the RMAC standings with a 12-1 record (17-2 overall).
- Western Colorado is eighth overall in the RMAC standings with a 6-6 league mark (8-9 overall).
- The Mountain Lions are one spot behind the Mountaineers and are tied with Regis and Chadron State College as all three teams are 5-8 in league games.
- Saturday's opponent, Fort Lewis, is in 14th place in the league standings with a 1-11 record (2-16 RMAC).
THE SERIES
- Vs. WCU: Since the series began in 1990, the Mountain Lions are 28-18 all-time against Western Colorado. UCCS' last win over the Mountaineers was Dec. 8, 2018 with a 65-59 victory in Gunnison.
- Vs. FLC: The Mountain Lions have won their last two games against the Skyhawks but trail FLC in the all-time series, 30-24.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
- Western Colorado is coming off two road losses this past weekend to Westminster College and Colorado Mesa University, but the Mountaineers boast a 5-2 record at home.
- Senior guard Samantha Coleman leads the squad in scoring with 10.6 points per game. Coleman is second in the league in three-point field goal percentage, shooting the ball at a 39.0 percent clip from downtown. She is also averaging 4.2 rebounds per game, the second most on the team. Second in scoring for WCU is senior Grace Kirscher with 10.1 points per game. She has added a team high 22 steals and dished out 17 assists. Redshirt senior forward Katie Dalton has made and attempted the most free throws for the Mountaineers (40-of-57), while leading the team in rebounding (4.5 per game) and blocked shots (17).
- Western is averaging 58.1 points per game while allowing 63.2 points. The Mountaineers are shooting the ball at a 39.2 percent rate (345-of-881) and dishing out 10.1 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
- Fort Lewis enters the weekend with a 2-16 overall record (1-11 RMAC) and on an eight-game losing streak. Both of the Skyhawks wins this season have come at home against Northern New Mexico and Colorado Christian.
- The RMAC leader in scoring hails from FLC. Redshirt-senior guard Sydney Candelaria is scoring a solid 19.7 points per game and ranks sixth in the league in field goal shooting percentage (37.0 percent). Candelaria is also pulling in 5.2 rebounds per game and leads the team in assists (37) and steals (29). Redshirt-sophomore Kelsey Sorenson is second on the team in scoring (10.7 points per game) and 10th in the RMAC in rebounding (6.5 per game).
- As a team, FLC is scoring 56.0 points per game but are getting outscored by nearly 15 points per game (70.9 ppg). The Skyhawks are gathering 32.3 rebounds per game and shooting the ball at a 35.6 percent rate.
HOT TAKES
- Against the Hardrockers, the Mountain Lions committed a season low eight turnovers.
- UCCS pulled down five more rebounds than SDSM on Saturday, making it the 15th time this season UCCS has outrebounded their opponent.
- Gracie Haneborg's five rebounds last Tuesday marked a career high while Talia DePetrillo recorded her first career steal.
- Tuesday's 18-point win at NMHU is the second highest margin of victory this season (89-67 vs. Southwest), while the 48 points scored are the fewest UCCS has allowed.
- The 87.5 free throw percentage against the Cowgirls is the best mark from the charity stripe this season.
- UCCS out-rebounded NMHU by 16 caroms, marking the sixth time the Mountain Lions have out-rebounded their opponent by 10 or more caroms.
- The Mountain Lions are the top rebounding team in the league with 769 total rebounds, and they're second in offensive rebounds per game (14.0), and third in defensive rebounds per game (28.7) and rebounds per game (42.7).
- UCCS also ranks in the top five in the RMAC in multiple categories, including free throw attempts (second, 359), steals (fourth, 156), three-point field goal defense (fourth, 28.3 percent), blocked shots (fifth, 60) and steals per game (8.7).
- Jasmine Jeffcoat leads UCCS in scoring (9.4 points per game), field goal percentage (57.0 percent) and free throws (40 free throws made, 58 free throws attempted).
- Agar Farres is averaging a team high 5.1 rebounds per game and 1.2 steals per game.
AWARD WINNERS
- The RMAC announced the 2021-22 RMAC All-Academic Teams on Jan. 31. Five Mountains were named to the Honor Roll:
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT
- Lynn Plett is in his sixth season as head coach of the Mountain Lions in 2021-22, and his 24th season overall. He owns a career record of 301-349 and a 70-82 record at UCCS.
- UCCS has been named to the WBCA Top 25 Team Academic Honor Roll for four straight years. Plett guided the Mountain Lions to their first RMAC championship title in program history in his first season in 2016-17, and their third NCAA Tournament appearance.
- Plett has coached at St. Joseph's (1994-95 to 2001-02), Lewis (2002-03 to 2006-07), and Missouri Western State (2007-08 to 2011-12) prior to joining the Mountain Lions.
UPCOMING GAMES
- After playing their last four games on the road, the Mountain Lions will return home for three straight games in Gallogly Events Center. UCCS will start the week playing a makeup game against Colorado Mesa on Feb. 9, followed by back-to-back games against Black Hills State University on Feb. 11 and Chadron State on Feb. 12.
