Mountain Lions Run Past Cougars, 72-64

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The offense was rolling for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team Friday night as they handed Colorado Christian University a 72-64 setback inside Gallgoly Events Center.  Three Mountain Lions scored in double-digits behind a solid 42.9 percent field goal shooting mark.

  • All-Time Series: UCCS leads the Cougars in the all-time series, 33-20.  The Mountain Lions have won the last three meetings and 11 of the last 13.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars Makenna Bodette laid in the first two points of the game before Sophie Abela knotted the game on the next trip down the court.  CCU expanded their lead to 6-2 with back-to-back jumpers.  Amyah Moore Allen netted four straight points with two free throws and a jumper that gave the Mountain Lions an 8-6 lead at 6:54 in the first quarter to contribute to the Mountain Lions 8-0 run.  After a jumper from Maggie Hutka, Moore Allen hit a floating jumper and a three-pointer to boost UCCS lead to seven, 15-8.  The Mountain Lions ended the first stanza outscoring CCU, 13-5.  UCCS shot a solid 55.6 percent from the floor on 10-of-18 field goals and while making all six free throw attempts.
  • Three minutes into the second quarter, Maison White hit a layup for her fourth point of the game.  Three possessions and three turnovers later, she added another layup for a 34-19 UCCS lead.  The Cougars cut into UCCS lead, 36-26, after a trey from Regan Loconte with 4:27 left in the half.  After Loconte's bucket, Gracie Haneborg made an old-fashioned three-point play while White hit a jumper with 64 seconds left in the second quarter to finalize the scoring in the first half as UCCS took a 15-point lead into halftime, 41-26.
  • Moore Allen scored three of the first five points of the second half to give UCCS their largest lead of the game, 42-26. The Mountain Lions kept control of the second half as they held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, winning for the second time in three games.  Moore Allen scored 14 of the Mountain Lions 31 points as White chipped in nine second half points and five rebounds.  UCCS started the second half shooting a solid 43.8 percent from the floor (7-of-16).
 
GAME STATISTICS
  • Moore Allen led both teams with a career-high 29 points behind 9-of-15 field goals and 9-of-12 free throws.  Six of her points came from downtown as she sank both three-point field goal attempts.
  • White chipped in a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  She sank 8-of-15 from the floor and added an assist and a steal.
  • Gracie Haneberg hit 3-of-8 field goals and all five free throw attempts.  She reigned in 10 rebounds with eight coming on the defensive glass and added a game high four steals. 
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions shot 42.9 percent from the floor (27-of-63) and a sank 15-of-20 free throws for 75 percent.
  • The Cougars were led by Makenna Bodette's 11 points.  Mykaela Moore came off the bench to register 10 points and three dimes.
  • UCCS outscored the Cougars in the paint, 44-26, and 15-10 on the fast break.  The Mountain Lions scored 17 points off 19 CCU turnovers while snagging 12 steals and dishing out 12 assists.
           
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • White notched her third straight double-double tonight (17 points, 11 rebounds) and the fifth of the season.
  • Haneborg claimed her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 caroms.
  • Moore Allen's 29 points, nine made field goals, nine made free throws and 12 free throw attempts were all career highs and season highs for the Mountain Lions.
  • UCCS' 72 points is a season high and the fourth time the Mountain Lions have netted 72 points this season.
