Mountain Lions Dominate in Bounce Back Win Over Westminster, 82-66

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team gives a team effort in dominating win over Westminster College as they bounce back from Friday night's loss.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP 

·       Final: UCCS 82, Westminster 66

·       Records: UCCS (8-3, 2-2 RMAC) | WC (1-8, 1-3 RMAC)

·       Facility | Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo.  

·       All-Time Series: This was the ninth matchup between the Mountain Lions and the Griffins, with UCCS now having a 6-3 record against WC all time.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

·       The Mountain Lions started off hot with a Mac Stodart three-pointer in the first minute of the game, followed up by a Beni Fungula slam and a Jayden Washington three to start the game off on an 8-0 run.

·       UCCS's offense was on a roll in the first half with big contributions from Jon'ill Fugett who freed up his teammates for five easy buckets that included a pass that led to a smooth layup from Keegan Phillips.

·       With just under seven minutes to go in the first half, UCCS caught fire from three in a 21-14 stretch that saw them sink five threes on seven attempts beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions would enter the half up 45-26.

·       Building a big lead was important to secure in the first half tonight because for the first 11 minutes of the second half, the Griffins and Mountain Lions went back and forth on a 18-17 run that still saw UCCS with a 63-to-43 lead with a little under nine minutes remaining in the game.

·       From then on, any basket made by WC was quickly responded to by a barrage of fastbreak points including a few high-flying dunks by the Mountain Lions. Despite their best efforts, the game was out of reach for the Griffin's resulting in the final score of 82-to-66.

GAME STATISTICS 

·       The Mountain Lions shot 14-of-34 (41 percent) from three-point range and held the Griffins to go only 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) from deep.

·       Washington shot a team high 4-of-7 from deep to go along with 14 points.

·       Nine of the 10 Mountain Lions that saw court time tonight recorded a positive plus-minus with Jezza McKenzie having the best on the team as a plus 23.

·       UCCS won the rebound battle 43-to-36 and dominated the assists game with 22 compared to WC's 10.

·       Four of the five UCCS starters scored in double digit figures tonight and the bench contributed 19 points as well in route to the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

·       Fugett's nine assists recorded tonight is a season high and ties a career high which was set on March 1st, 2022.

·       Washington collected a new career high in points in a game with 14 and a new career high in three-pointers made with four.

·       The Mountain Lions had a dominant performance through and through, as UCCS maintained the lead tonight for a total of 39 minutes, not being down at any point in the game.
