Putu’s Late Goal Carries Mountain Lions to 3-2 Win Over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Graduate student Marvin Putu netted an 87th minute game-winning goal on Thursday afternoon at ASU Soccer/Lacrosse Field to push the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the Adams State University Grizzlies.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 3, ASU 2
Records: UCCS (9-1-3, 3-0-1 RMAC), ASU (0-12-1, 0-4-0 RMAC)
Facility: ASU Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium | Alamosa, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions improve to 18-2-1 all-time against the Grizzlies and extend their winning streak against ASU to five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mountain Lions dominated possession of the ball to open the match, but it was the Grizzlies who opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a goal off the foot of Ranulfo Lopez to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • UCCS continued to control the ball in their offensive attacking zone throughout the remainder of the first half but were unable to find an equalizer until the 42nd minute when graduate student Marvin Putu found the left side of the net to even the match at one goal apiece. Despite the even score, the Mountain Lions finished the opening half with an 11-2 shot advantage and 4-2 shot on goal advantage.
  • Less than three minutes into the second half, the Mountain Lions were gifted with a penalty kick opportunity after Adams State was charged with a handball inside the penalty box. Kolby Raineri lined up to take the PK and converted for the goal to make it a 2-1 lead for UCCS in the 48th minute.
  • In the 67th minute, the Grizzlies would find a response as Harrison Olmstead gained a wide-open path to the net and fired past UCCS goalkeeper Declan Domyan in a one-on-one standoff to even the game, 2-2.
  • The Mountain Lions once again regained their lead in the 87th minute as the ASU goalkeeper overcommitted on a pass into the box by Ben Ashfield, leaving Putu wide open to score his second goal of the game and give UCCS a 3-2 advantage that they would hold onto for the final three minutes of the match to secure three points in the conference standings.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • UCCS recorded a 22-4 shot advantage over the Grizzlies, while also outpacing them in shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (9-2).
  • Putu matched Ashfield for the team lead with four shots as he collected his sixth and seventh goals of the season. Raineri also added to his team and conference leading goal tally with his 11th score of the season.
  • Domyan records his ninth win of the season despite allowing multiple goals in a game for the first time this season. He finished with two saves in 90 minutes patrolling the net.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With the win, UCCS men's soccer extends their program record unbeaten streak to ten games and surpasses their season win total from last season (8). The single season record for wins in a season is 13, established in three separate seasons with most recent coming in 2015.
  • UCCS men's soccer received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Week 5 National Rankings Poll, marking the fourth consecutive week that they have received national attention. The Mountain Lions remained ranked at No. 5 in the USC South Central Regional Rankings for a second consecutive week.
