PREVIEW | Women’s Soccer Set to Battle No. 2 DBU and TAMUC in the Lone Star State

The University of Colorado Colorado women's soccer team will kick off their first road trip of the 2021 season in a big way as the Mountain Lions battle No. 2 ranked Dallas Baptist University and Texas A&M University-Commerce. The Patriots of DBU are slated first with a 6 p.m. (MT) match in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday, Sep. 8 with a rematch against the Lions of Texas A&M Commerce scheduled for Saturday, Sep. 11 at 10 a.m. (MT) in Commerce, Texas.

Last Time Out
  • UCCS opened their 2021 season at home with a pair of matchups against St. Edward's University and Texas A&M University-Commerce with the Mountain Lions coming out 1-1-0.
  • Thursday's match with the Hilltoppers resulted in a 3-1 win for the Mountain Lions as the offense didn't skip a beat, outshooting SEU 13-8 and 7-2 in shots on goal.
  • Sunday's match against Texas A&M Commerce was one out of the ordinary with UCCS falling to the Lions 4-3 after allowing three second half goals. The Mountain Lions hadn't allowed four goals in a single match since Oct. 25, 2018 but still came to outshoot Texas A&M Commerce 17-10 with both teams recording five shots on goal.
  • Redshirt junior Chloe DeShazer finished the weekend 1-1 in frame with one save on nine shots faced and two goals allowed.
  • Graduate student Tarah Patterson was the offensive leader for UCCS finishing with a goal in both games, including an assist on Sunday to total a team high five points.
  • Redshirt freshman Kelsey Takahashi also netted one goal in both games for four total points while also adding a game winning goal in the mix.
  • Freshman Fie Steenberg dished out two assists in her first career collegiate match to register two points from the weekend.
  • Defensively, midfielder Ella Fischer and defender Zoe Sims posted a team high 164 minutes with both starting in each game.
 
The Series
  • Wednesday will serve as just the third matchup between UCCS and Dallas Baptist with the Patriots holding the 1-0-1 advantage. The Mountain Lions' and Patriots' last matchup ended in a 0-0 double overtime draw on Aug. 30, 2018 inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
  • After Sunday's loss the Lions took over the all-time series with a 2-1 record as the Mountain Lions will look to get even on Saturday.
 
Scouting Dallas Baptist
  • United Soccer Coaches' new No. 2 nationally ranked team, Dallas Baptist (2-0, 0-0 LSC) is off to a red-hot start with two wins over two nationally ranked teams last week in No. 10 University of Central Oklahoma and No. 15 Oklahoma Baptist University.
  • DBU rallied to score two goals in the final six minutes to come away with the 2-1 win against No. 10 UCO as the Patriots shut out No. 15 OBU 5-0.
  • The Patriots are currently averaging 3.50 goals early in the season and are allowing 0.50 per game.
  • Dallas Baptist has spread the ball around in their first two games of the season with six different Patriots scoring, including fifth year Abigail Olmos who leads the team with two goals. DBU also has five different Patriots who have tallied an assist on the year.
  • In frame, DBU's Hailey Brown and Adrianna Schroeder are both 1-0 with Schroeder leading the way in saves, 4-3. Schroeder has allowed the lone goal for the Patriots as Brown posted the shutout over OBU.
 
Scouting Texas A&M Commerce
  • Just two days removed from hosting Texas A&M-Commerce in Mountain Lion Stadium, the Mountain Lions must now travel to Commerce, Texas to face the Lions on their home field.
  • The Lions hold an overall 1-1 record for 2021 after being shutout 3-0 against Metropolitan State University of Denver last Thursday and pulling off the 4-3 upset over UCCS.
  • Texas A&M Commerce has surrendered six goals in two games for a team 3.0 GAA as the Lions average 2.0 goals per game.
  • The Lions rattled off 12 shots and three shots on goal against MSU Denver on Thursday but failed to get a shot in net. They turned around Sunday to register 10 shots and five shots on goal to net three goals as the game-winner came off UCCS for an own goal in the 81st minute.
  • Karalie Morrison, Melissa Storey, and Cora Welch have each scored for the Lions and hold the team lead in points with two as Leslie Campuzano owns the only assist for Texas A&M Commerce through the first two games.
 
Hot Takes
  • Kelsey Takahashi and Tarah Patterson currently lead the team in goals with two each as they rank tied for second in the RMAC. Patterson also adds her name to the RMAC Leader list by being top-10 in shots per game (tied fourth, 4.50), shots on goal per game (tied third, 2.00), and points (tied fifth, 5). Fie Steenberg's two assists rank her in the top-10 among the RMAC as she sits tied for third.
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions 3.00 goals per game ranks them tied for third in the conference while UCCS' 30 shots give them the fourth most in the RMAC.
 
Weather
  • The forecast for Wednesday's match against DBU in Dallas, Texas is set to be sunny and hot with a game time temperature of 91 degrees and zero percent chance of precipitation.
  • Saturday's forecast in Commerce, Texas will be relatively the same with it set to be mostly cloudy with a game time temperature of 80 degrees with a two percent chance of precipitation and winds reaching up to seven miles-per-hour.
 
UCCS Under Head Coach J. B. Belzer
  • Head coach J. B. Belzer enters his second season at the helm for UCCS and 26th total season as a Division II head coach after spending 24 seasons at Regis University.
  • Belzer holds a 325-148-37 for the seventh most wins in NCAA Division II Women's Soccer history.
  • Wednesday's match against DBU will be Belzer's first-ever matchup against the Patriots as he holds a 2-5 record against Texas A&M Commerce.
  • Last season Belzer received his seventh career RMAC Coach of the Year honor as he coached six All-RMAC selections, including Tarah Patterson who was voted RMAC Player of the Year and RMAC Academic Co-Player of the Year.

  • The Mountain Lions will hit the road once again next week but this time to the Sunshine State of Florida to face University of Tampa on Wednesday, Sep. 15, followed by a match against Saint Leo University on Friday, Sep. 17.
