Volleyball Falls to Cardinals, Hawks at Washburn Invitational

Ammerman Named to All-Tournament Team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOPEKA, Kansas – Playing in their final two matches of the 2021 Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team lost two 3-1 decisions to William Jewell College and No. 25 Rockhurst University.  The losses drop the Mountain Lions overall record to 1-3 on the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VS. WILLIAM JEWELL
  • The Mountain Lions took the first set, 25-18 and nearly grabbed a 2-0 lead but fell in extra points, 26-14.  Lauryn Shockley put down a match high 17 kills.  She hit .425 on 40 attempts without committing an error.  Julia Geiger chipped in a career high 14 kills and hit .194 at the net.  Hannah Ammerman was close to a double-double as she registered nine kills and 12 digs.
  • Setter Emily Ettel finished the match with three aces, 10 digs and a match high 37 assists.  Jordyn Kinsey led a trio of Mountain Lions in double digit digs as she dug up a team high 15 digs.
  • The Cardinals were led by Anna Godfredsen with 11 kills as Chloe Robinson and Bella LaPorta each had 10 kills.
  • UCCS recorded 50 kills, eight aces and 59 digs.  WJC edged the Mountain Lions offensive output with 58 kills and a .285 hitting mark,
VS. ROCKHURST
  • The Mountain Lions started their final match of the weekend with a 27-29 loss in the opening set to Rockhurst.   After trailing 2-0, UCCS won the third set, 25-16, before falling in the final set, 15-12.  Due to technical difficulties during the match, statistics are not yet available.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Outside hitter Hannah Ammerman was tabbed to the Washburn Invitational All-Tournament Team. In four matches, Ammerman tallied 30 kills, six assists, four aces, five block assists, 35 digs, 36.5 points and hit .091 at the net.  Against Minot State on Friday, she hit a solid .385 behind six kills on 13 attempts (one error).  The following day against William Jewell, she put down a season high nine kills and 12 digs.
  • Head coach Chrissy Elder is one win away from earning her 100th win at UCCS.  In nine seasons on the sidelines for the Mountain Lions, Elder is 99-111 overall.  In 10 years as a head coach, she owns a 106-134 record.
  • In the last three matches, the Mountain Lions have had a set go to extra points in each match.  UCCS has been outscored in the three matches, 2-4.
 
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will return home to Gallogly Events Center to host the 2021 UCCS Mountain Lion Classic Sept. 10-11.  The Mountain Lions will host Texas A&M International on Friday, Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m., followed by a night match against William Jewell at 7 p.m.  On Saturday, UCCS will play Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m.
