COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 18 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer opened the 2021 season with a 3-1 home victory over St. Edward's University on Friday morning after heavy rainfall Thursday night led to a reschedule inside Mountain Lion Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• It was reigning RMAC Player of the Year
Tarah Patterson who got the UCCS offense off and running for the 2021 season by making a defender miss and burying a 10-yard shot in the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 11

Fie Steenberg was in on the assist as she fed Patterson in the box to claim her first collegiate assist.
• The Mountain Lions did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the match as Steenberg tallied her second assist of the match in the 22
nd minute with a tipped pass that led to a one-on-one for redshirt freshman
Kelsey Takahashi. Takahashi took on SEU goalkeeper Meghan Dunning and came out on top as the forward netted her first goal on the season while registering what would be the game-winning goal to extend the UCCS lead 2-0.
• The first half belonged to the Mountain Lions but the Hilltoppers came out in the second half to find a break in the UCCS defense in the 59
th minute and cut the UCCS lead to one. Goalkeeper
Chloe DeShazer made a save from the right side of the field but a ball squeaked through the outreached hands of the keeper as SEU's Sarah Gunderson tapped it in for the 2-1 score.
• Down one score, SEU kept the offensive pressure on with four additional shots in the half but DeShazer and the UCCS backline did not fold as graduate transfer
Bri Johnson put the game away with a goal in the 86
th minute.
