HOW IT HAPPENED
• It was another close game between the Mountain Lions and Mavericks as pitching was the name of the game.
• UCCS starter
JJ Rytz made the first start of the career and threw an absolute gem by going six full innings while giving up just one run.
• CMU plated the first run of the game with Jordan Stubbings driving in Matthew Turner off a double to right field.
• The Mavericks held on to the one-run lead for three full innings before
Evan Richards tied the game up with one swing of the bat by driving a deep ball to right field for a solo home run.
• With the 1-1 tie, Rytz went to work for the next two innings where the Mountain Lions got out of key bases-loaded, one-out jam as Rytz struck out Chase Hamilton and forced a groundout to keep the game tied at 1-1.
• UCCS'
Matt McDermott reached base in both the sixth and eighth inning where he ended up just 90-feet away from taking the lead but the Mavericks worked themselves out of both innings with two fly outs as the game remained tied heading into the ninth inning.
• Making his relief appearance in the eighth inning,
Creede Jeffers started the ninth on the mound and faced just one batter after CMU forced a leadoff walk to bring in UCCS reliever
Hayden Salverda. A sacrifice bunt and groundout to second base quickly followed as the winning run stood on third for CMU. The winning run would then come across as a wild pitch scored the winning run and gave CMU the 2-1 lead.
• In the bottom of the ninth, the Mountain Lions tried to get something started by drawing a leadoff walk but the Mavericks held on to retire the next three batters to force a game two.
