GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 8 seed University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team had their season come to an end Thursday night at nationally-ranked No. 2 and top-seed Colorado Mesa University in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Spring Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, hosted by CMU in Grand Junction, Colo.

Final: UCCS 0, No. 2 Colorado Mesa 3 (20-25, 20-25, 21-25)

All-Time Series: Colorado Mesa leads the all-time series, 35-8. The last time the Mountain Lions defeated CMU was Nov. 5, 2016 in Grand Junction, Colo. (W, 3-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set between UCCS and CMU, both teams kept the score tight between each other in the first half of the set as neither team led by more than three points.
- Jenna Szilagyi put down a kill to give UCCS a 16-15 lead, but the Mavericks accounted for seven kills, one block and two UCCS errors to take the win in the first set, 25-20.
- CMU kept the momentum going in the second set, taking a quick 8-2 lead. The Mountain Lions fought back and tied the match at 13-13 after a 7-2 run, but the Mavericks were able to pull away for the second set win, 25-20.
- The third and final set proved to be just as tight as the first two set as neither team led by three points during the set.
- Lauryn Shockley tallied her seventh kill of the night to tie the match at 20-20. After an attack error by UCCS that gave the Mavericks a 23-20 lead, Emily Ettel kept UCCS in the set with a kill to cut into the lead, 23-21. However, the undefeated Mavericks kept the record perfect after notching a kill and a block to seal the win, 25-21.
STATS FROM THE MATCH
- Grace Ferguson and Lauryn Shockley each tallied seven kills tonight. Ferguson hit .125 at the net while Maren Burkhart hit .154 behind five kills and 13 attempts.
- Ettel accounted for 31 of UCCS' 34 set assists. She also dug up eight attacks and added three kills and two blocks.
- The back row was led by Jordyn Kinsey's 17 digs. Kinsey also posted three assists and received 12 serves.
- As a team, UCCS hit .108 at the net and registered 35 kills and five blocks.
- Maddi Foutz led Colorado Mesa with nine kills and a .200 hitting mark.
- CMU blocked 10 UCCS attacks and recorded 44 kills with a .232 hitting percentage.

- UCCS ends their 2020-21 season with a 4-10 overall record and a 4-7 mark in league matches.
