HOW IT HAPPENED
• It was a shutout performance by starting pitcher
Daniel Silva and the Mountain Lion defense as Silva threw a complete game shutout by only allowing five hits in the game.
• While Silva went to work on the mound, the UCCS offense got to work in the batter's box right away. Graduate student
Matt McDermott reached base with a bunt base hit in the first inning as redshirt junior
Jake Anderson drove him in with a double to right field, making the score 1-0.
• Silva would run through the Oredigger lineup in innings two through four with just one hit given up as the Mountain Lions went to the bottom of the fourth inning to tack on more runs.
• Back-to-back doubles from
Jaeden Hegmann and
Matt Berg started the home half of the fourth, putting a quick UCCS run across. Berg then forced a throwing error by the Orediggers' catcher by snagging third and coasting home for the two-run fourth inning, and the 3-0 UCCS lead.
• The Mountain Lions went on to register four more runs between the seventh an eighth innings starting with an RBI single from Hegmann in the seventh. In the eighth three more came across off three hits in the inning. Redshirt junior
Walker Rumsey drove in the first run with an RBI single to left field as
Evan Richards put a ball in play to the right side to score the second run. To bring in one more insurance run, head coach
Dave Hajek leaned on McDermott to lay down a squeeze bunt to score Rumsey from third.
