Women’s Basketball Ends Season with a 57-50 Road Win

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a staunch defense to close out the 2020-21 regular season with a 57-50 win at South Dakota School of Mines Friday night.

All-Time Series: UCCS leads the all-time series, 7-5, and have won two of the last three meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior guard Abby Feickert started the game scoring the first basket for either team.  The Mountain Lions and Hardrockers traded the lead back-and-forth in the first half as SDM edged UCCS after 10 minutes of action, 15-13.
  • Both teams went cold from the floor in the second stanza, combining for 17 points and 2-of-13 field goals from downtown.
  • Freshman Jessica Nation scored her first points of the game with 4:13 left in the second quarter. It would be the last field goal of the half as the Rockers went into intermission making three straight free throws to take a 23-22 lead.
  • The offense ramped up in the second half for the Mountain Lions as they outscored the Rockers, 22-14 to take a 44-37 lead after three complete quarters.
  • UCCS made 9-of-18 field goals in the third quarter and out-rebounded SDM, 9-5.
  • The Mountain Lions went on a 10-0 run in the second half of the third quarter and finished the stanza outscoring SDM, 14-3.
  • Maddie Golla started the run with a trey followed by two free throws from Tatum Tellin that gave the Mountain Lions the lead they would not relinquish.  Bo Shaffer added a basket and free throw combined with another jumper from Tellin as part of the 10-point run.  Elly Johnson finished the stanza making back-to-back layups for UCCS.
  • The Mountain Lions held their seven-point lead to start off the final quarter and led by as many as nine points.  Feickert gave UCCS a nine-point lead with 41 seconds left in regulation as she closed out her basketball career scoring the final two points for UCCS from the free throw line.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Ten of the 11 Mountain Lions that played tonight scored at least two points.  Nation led the team with nine points, two blocks and a steal.
  • Shaffer, Feickert and Johnson each chipped in eight points.  Shaffer and Johnson each pulled in five rebounds while Kaity Hovasse came off the bench to tally a team high seven rebounds.
  • Ellie Moore blocked three shots and stole the ball twice to go with her two assists and seven points.
  • UCCS hit 38.3 percent from the floor (23-of-6), 26.7 percent from long range (4-of-15) and 53.8 percent from the line (7-of-13).
  • Juneau Jones came off the bench for SDM to tally 11 rebounds and nine points.
  • The Mountain Lions blocked seven shots and forced the Hardrockers to commit 21 turnovers. 
  • UCCS outscored SDM in the paint (26-18), off turnovers (17-15) and on second chance points (12-6).
 
UP NEXT
The Mountain Lions wrap up the season with a 5-12 overall record (5-12 RMAC).  UCCS was 2-7 at home this season and owned a 3-5 record on the road.
