Men’s Basketball Falls on Buzzer Beater to BHSU, 73-71

COLORADO SPRING, Colo. – Black Hills State University hit a jumper as time expired to hand the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team a 73-71 setback Monday night in Gallogly Events Center.  The game was originally scheduled to be played in December but was rescheduled due to COVID-19 testing and protocols.

All-Time Series: UCCS leads the all-time series, 10-9, over BHSU, but the Yellow Jackets have won three of the last four meetings.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
A turnover by the Mountain Lions underneath Black Hills State's basket with .05 seconds remaining in regulation led to a tip-in bucket from Joel Scott to give BHSU a 73-71 win over UCCS.
 
The Mountain Lions trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before going on a 16-0 run that gave UCCS a 64-59 lead with 6:27 left in regulation.
 
Bobby Martin led four UCCS scorers during the run with five points.  The Mountain Lions made 7-of-8 field goals, including 1-for-1 from long range while holding BHSU scoreless on six field goal attempts.
 
Black Hills State would quickly tie the game at 66 all with just over three minutes to play in the game. 
 
Wyatt Dolberry drained a three-pointer at 1:44 to knot the game at 69-69.
 
Trailing by two points, 71-69 with 29 seconds left, Martin made both free throw attempts to knot the game again, 71-71. 
 
BHSU had a jump shot in the paint to take the lead with seven seconds left but the shot missed the rim and gave UCCS one final chance to score in regulation.  The Mountain Lions' turnover led to a tip-in bucket from Scott for the game-winner.

STATS FROM THE GAME
Martin led five Mountain Lions in double figures.  He came off the bench to tally 16 points, six rebounds and two steals.
 
Geoff Kelly added 12 points on 5-of-7 field goals. Kelly chipped in three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.
 
Alijah Comithier, Jezza McKenzie and Wyatt Dolberry each netted 11 points.  Dolberry added a team high seven rebounds and four assists.
 
UCCS made 44.4 percent of their field goals (24-of-54), 52.4 percent from three-point range (11-of-21) and 75 percent from the line (12-of-16).
 
The Mountain Lions outrebounded BSHU, 33-30, and outscored the Yellow Jackets bench, 29-11.
 
BHSU's Scott and Sindou Cisse led all scorers with 19 points each.

UCCS will play host to Western Colorado University Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
