SPEARFISH, S.D. – A nine-point scoring run late in the fourth quarter brought the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team within one point of Black Hills State University with just 28 seconds left in regulation, but the home team was able to hold off the Mountain Lions as UCCS fell short in the comeback, 65-61, Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Two straight baskets from Sophie Abela and a three-pointer from Shelby Megyeri gave UCCS a 7-2 lead from the jump ball but an 11-1 run by the YellowJackets gave BHSU a 13-8 lead and a five-point advantage after the first quarter, 20-15.
- UCCS retook the lead in the second quarter as Jasmine Jeffcoat and Agar Farres hit layups capped off by a three-pointer from Jessica Nation for a 22-20 lead with 6:29 left in the first half. The YellowJackets closed the first half making three straight free throws to take a 32-29 lead at intermission.
- A 13-0 run by the home team led to BHSU's largest lead over the Mountain Lions, 51-35, at the 3:56 mark in the third quarter.
- Trailing by 10 points to start the fourth quarter, 51-41, the Mountain Lions battled back and came within one point of Black Hills State. With 3:21 left in regulation and down 10 points, 59-49, Ellie Moore started the comeback with a jumper, followed by two free throws from Nation. A defensive rebound from Sophie Abela led to another basket from Moore as she drilled a turnaround jumper.
- After a UCCS timeout, Nation grabbed her third defensive rebound of the game and got the ball in the hands of Alexa Dominguez who drew a foul and drained both attempts from the charity stripe. The Mountain Lions 9-0 run was capped off by Maison White who hit the second of two attempts from the line to bring UCCS within one point, 59-58, with 28 ticks left on the clock.
- Abela netted the final three points for the Mountain Lions behind a free throw and jumper in the paint, but UCCS was forced to foul, sending the Yellow Jackets to attempt eight free throws where they drained six on their way to a four-point win.
GAME STATISTICS
- Moore came off the bench to lead UCCS in scoring with 12 points and a team high seven rebounds. She made 5-of-7 from the floor and both free throw attempts.
- Farres chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 field goals and three rebounds. She joined Nation and Megyeri as the three Mountain Lions to each drain a three-pointer.
- The Mountain Lions fourth quarter comeback was fueled by 6-of-9 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws. UCCS finished the game shooting 49 percent from the floor (24-of-49), 33.3 percent from three-point range (3-of-9), and 10-of-19 from the charity stripe for 52.6 percent.
- UCCS' defense held BHSU to just 36.5 percent from the floor (19-of-52) but the Yellow Jackets were successful on 16-of-20 free throw attempts for 80 percent.
- The Mountain Lions dominated the paint, outscoring BHSU 32-8. UCCS' bench netted 29 points to BHSU's 12 bench points, while the Mountain Lions also edged BHSU on the boards, 34-31.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- UCCS outrebounded their opponent for the eighth time this season.
- Today was only the second time this season UCCS did not record a block, and the first time neither team blocked a shot.
- Today's four-point setback marked the fourth loss this season by five points or fewer.
- Moore led the Mountain Lions in scoring for the first time this season while Jeffcoat led the team in rebounding for the fourth game.
UP NEXT
- UCCS will return home in two weeks to close out the calendar year on Friday, Dec. 31 against Colorado Mesa University at 3 p.m. The Mountain Lions will then open the New Year hosting Westminster College on Jan. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
