PREVIEW | Mountain Lions Set to Host Javelinas, Regis in Home Opener

THIS WEEK'S GAMES
This Friday the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will begin their home season against Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off inside Gallolgy Events Center.  On Sunday, the Mountain Lions will play host to Regis University in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m.
 
GAME COVERAGE  
LAST TIME OUT
  • UCCS opened their 2021-22 season on the road against two Lone Star Conference opponents this past weekend.  The Mountain Lions opened the season at Midwestern State University, falling to the Mustangs, 74-63 on Friday.  The following night in Lawton, Okla., the Mountain Lions suffered an 80-54 setback.
  • Maison White led UCCS in scoring both nights, as she finished with 12 points in each game.  She also pulled down a team high 17 rebounds and blocked five shots across the two games.
  • Sophie Abela dished out 12 assists, eight of which came against the Mustangs on Friday.
 
RMAC RECORD/STANDINGS
  • Fourteen of the 15 league schools opened their season this past weekend. Regis is one of three RMAC teams to start their season 2-0 (Colorado Mesa University, Colorado School of Mines).
 
THE SERIES
  • Vs. TAMK:  Friday's contest between the Mountain Lions and Javelinas will be the first meeting between the two teams.

SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
  • Texas A&M – Kingsville opened their season with a solo game at home against Chadron State College, defeating the Eagles, 58-51.  The Javelinas will play their second game of the season on Thursday at MSU Denver.  Jayde Tschritter led TAMK in the season opener, netting 15 points, nine of which came from long range.  Mia Rivers chipped in 14 points and a team high five assists.  The Javelinas shot 39.3 percent against the Eagles and edged CSC in rebounding, 36-35.
 
SCOUTING THE RANGERS
  • The Regis Rangers opened their season with two home wins against St. Edward's University (W, 62-57) and St. Mary's (W, 66-58). 
  • Pacing Regis in their opening weekend was Josey Ryan with 29 points, six rebounds and two assists.  Athena Saragoza added 23 points while Morgan L. Smith reigned in a team high 17 rebounds. In two games, Regis is shooting the ball at a .362 clip and outscoring their opponent by 6.5 points and 10.5 rebounds.
 
HOT TAKES
  • Freshman Maison White made a splash in her collegiate debut with UCCS.  The 6-foot-0 forward leads the RMAC in field goal percentage after draining 68.8 percent from the floor (11-of-16) and is first in blocks shots with five (2.5 blocks per game).  Her team high 18 rebounds are the fifth most in the RMAC while her 12 points per game are the 17th most.
  • Sophie Abela's 12 dimes this past week rank her on top of the RMAC stats at 6.0 assists per game.  She is ninth in assist-turnover ratio at 1.2.
  • Ines Latapia picked some pockets on the court, accounting for eight steals in her first games with the Mountain Lions.  Her 4.0 steals per game are the second most in the league.
  • Forward Jasmine Jeffcoat has snagged three steals (20th in the RMAC) and 12 rebounds, ranking her 20th and 24th in the league, respectively.
  • Friday's season opener against MSU is the fourth time in the last five seasons the Mountain Lions have started their season against a Lone Star Conference opponent.
 
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT
  • Lynn Plett is in his sixth season as head coach of the Mountain Lions in 2021-22, and his 24th season overall.  He owns a career record of 294-339 and a 63-72 record at UCCS.
  • UCCS has been named to the WBCA Top 25 Team Academic Honor Roll for four straight years.
  • Plett guided the Mountain Lions to their first RMAC championship title in program history in his first season in 2016-17, and their third NCAA Tournament appearance.  The 2021-22 season is Plett's 24th season as a head coach (294-337).
  • Plett has coached at St. Joseph's (1994-95 to 2001-02), Lewis (2002-03 to 2006-07), and Missouri Western State (2007-08 to 2011-12) prior to joining the Mountain Lions.

    • Military members, seniors (age 55+): $3
    • UCCS faculty, staff, students (with ID), children ages 0-12, UCCS Alumni Association members: Free
  • Masks are required at all times indoors.
 
FACE COVERINGS
  • Per campus policy, all students, faculty, staff and visitors on the UCCS campus are REQUIRED to wear a face covering while indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
 
UPCOMING GAMES
  • UCCS will stay close to home for their next round of games as they travel to Pueblo, Colo. to take on Friends University on Friday, Nov. 26 and University of Southwest on Nov. 27.  Both games will tip-off at 1 p.m. from Massari Arena on the campus of CSU Pueblo.
