Mountain Lions Fall in Straight Sets to No. 1 MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team fell in three sets to the No. 1 nationally ranked Metropolitan State University Denver Roadrunners on Friday night at Auraria Event Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSU Denver came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they surged out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set. A pair of kills from Hannah Ammerman and a setting error by MSU Denver brought the Mountain Lions within five points at 17-12, but the Roadrunners would pull away late to take the opening set by a score of 25-16. MSU Denver posted a dominant .517 hitting percentage in the first set while registering 17 kills to the Mountain Lions 11.
  • An early 3-0 run consisting of kills from from Camden Strain, Hannah Ammerman, and Maren Burkhart helped the Mountain Lions grab their first lead of the evening, 4-2, in the second set. After surrendering the lead, Ammerman hammered down back-to-back kills to bring the score back to even at 14-14, but the Roadrunners would finish with an 11-4 run to win the second set 25-18.
  • After a kill by MSU Denver's Rylee Hladky pushed the Roadrunner's lead to 19-11 in the final set, the Mountain Lions attempted to mount a late comeback push as a kill from Maren Burkhart closed UCCS' deficit to just four points, 23-19. The Roadrunners, however, would take the next two points to close out a 25-19 win in the set and a 3-0 victory in the match.
 
MATCH STATISTICS
  • The Roadrunners held the advantage in kills (42-30), hitting percentage (.360-.108), and assists (40-27).
  • Camden Strain and Hannah Ammerman tied for the team lead with eight kills each, while Lauryn Shockley followed closely behind with six kills. Grace Ferguson paced the Mountain Lions with a .333 hitting percentage while adding four kills.
  • Emily Ettel accounted for each of UCCS' 27 assists on the night while also recording the team's lone service ace in the match.
  • Defensively, Lauryn Shockley registered a team-leading nine digs and Grace Ferguson netted three total blocks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tonight's matchup was the first time the Mountain Lions had faced a team ranked No. 1 in the national rankings since the 2007 season.

  • The Mountain Lions will finish their regular season schedule on the road tomorrow night as they travel to Lakewood, Colo. to take on Colorado Christian at 7 p.m.
