Mountain Lions Drop Season Finale at MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team fell 4-3 to Metropolitan State University Denver in their season finale on Sunday afternoon at MSUD Regency Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:      
  • It was a quick start offensively for the Mountain Lions as they recorded four shots in the first 10 minutes of the match before connecting for the first goal of the game in the 20th minute. Sophomore Alex Andersson drove into the left side of the box and threaded a pass inside to a sliding Liam McGuire who punched the ball into the net to put UCCS ahead 1-0.
  • The Mountain Lions would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute after Adam Baldwin touched a pass ahead to Andersson, who pushed the ball past a charging goalkeeper into the right side of the net for the goal.
  • MSU Denver struck back in the 39th minute to cut the UCCS lead in half to 2-1 after Aaron Biggerstaff and Hernan Ibarra connected with Aidan Bates for the Roadrunners first goal of the afternoon.
  • After corralling the ball off an MSU Denver corner kick, goalkeeper Andreas Kokoska punted downfield to Andersson who made a move around the defender and fired his second goal of the game to extend the Mountain Lion's lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute.
  • The Roadrunners would quickly find a response with Adan Perez cutting the UCCS lead to 3-2 just over a minute later as he took a cross from Max Hand for the score in the 59th minute.
  • MSU Denver continued to carry the momentum as Noah Hannula would tie the game at three in the 68th minute before Aidan Bates added his second goal of the game to give the Roadrunners a 4-3 lead in the 74th minute.
  • The Mountain Lions would threaten late in the second half, getting shots on frame by Kaydon Zamora-Reeves and Kolby Raineri, but were unable to find the equalizer as the Roadrunners managed to hold on to their 4-3 advantage.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • The Mountain Lions outshot MSU Denver 21-15 and held an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal while matching them with five corner kicks.
  • Midfielder Alex Andersson recorded his third multi-goal game of the season as he scored two goals while adding three shots and an assist.
  • Redshirt senior Liam McGuire led the team with four shots and scored his fourth goal of the season.
  • Goalkeeper Andreas Kokoska played the full 90 minutes in net, recording six saves on 15 shots faced.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Andersson records his third multi-goal of the season and finishes the season with an RMAC-leading 12 goals and 26 points.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Mountain Lions finish the season with an 8-8-1 overall record and a 4-6 record in conference action.
