COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team completes the series sweep of Colorado Christian University with a 10-7 victory in the series finale this afternoon. The Mountain Lions tallied 17 hits in the game including seven doubles and one triple. UCCS has now won nine straight games since returning home and are 11-7 overall this season, with a 4-0 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Matt McDermott led the team offensively today, going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI. He was followed by
Luis Samorano, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI,
Ryan Schmidt, who went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, and
Jake Anderson who went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Jonathan Cowles (3-0) secured his third win of the season after going seven complete innings and allowing four runs (three earned) off eight hits while racking up seven strikeouts.
Hayden Salverda and
Creede Jeffers each got one inning of relief work and combined to allow only three runs (all earned) off two hits with five strikeouts.
UCCS got going right away with two runs off three hits in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. CCU answered with one in the third, but UCCS added another in the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Samorano, making the score 3-1.
The Cougars scored another in the fifth off a double, but Anderson answered with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2 UCCS. CCU then responded with a two-run sixth, to which UCCS again answered with a three-run sixth thanks to an RBI triple from McDermott, an RBI single from
Matt Berg and an RBI double from
Matt Clarke, resulting in an 8-4 UCCS lead. UCCS would add two more runs, one coming in the seventh and one in the eighth inning, respectively, to make it 10-4.
CCU did their best to make a comeback in the ninth, scoring three runs off two hits to bring the score to 10-7, but their attempt fell short as UCCS completed the sweep.
The Mountain Lions are back in action next weekend as they will host Dixie State University in a four-game series at Mountain Lion Park. The first game is scheduled for Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m., followed a double header on Saturday, March 14 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The series finale will be on Sunday, March 15 at 12 p.m.
