Richards Steals Home to Boost UCCS to a 4-3 Win Over CCU

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team starts their conference season off with a win as they take down Colorado Christian University, 4-3. The Mountain Lions earn their second walk-off win in three games as Evan Richards scored on a passed ball in the ninth innings to give UCCS the win.

Daniel Silva was the star in this game as he earns his first win of the season after a stellar performance on the mound. Silva ends the day allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits with five strikeouts in a complete game effort. The senior threw only 98 pitches in his start as well.

Evan Richards had the hot bat for UCCS in the game, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. John Mallon and Walker Rumsey also each went 2-for-4 in the game, with Rumsey adding the third RBI for UCCS.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars scored one in the second off a solo home run to take the lead, 1-0. The Mountain Lions answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a double from Richards, giving UCCS a 2-1 lead. The Mountain Lions added one more in the fourth inning off an RBI-single from Rumsey.

CCU would respond in the fifth with two runs off three hits and a UCCS error, bringing the game to a 3-3 tie. Neither team would score in the next three innings, awarding UCCS another walk-off opportunity. In the ninth, Richards got things going with a single, followed immediately by Rumsey. After Richards advanced to third on a fielder's choice, he was able to read a ball in the dirt perfectly and steal home, and the win for UCCS.

UCCS and CCU are back in action tomorrow with a double-header at Mountain Lion Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by another game around 2 p.m.
